Sorry OP, that’s a tough break. I’m willing to bet it’s not your fault, but it’s still very hard to prove. Toyota released a TSB for some 2.7L second gen manuals. I bought mine CPO with 35k miles on the clock and the clutch started slipping at 50k miles. I didn’t qualify for the TSB because I had too many miles on it. The cutoff was around 36k miles I believe. So this wouldn’t be toyota’s first time releasing faulty clutches on the tacomas. I believe the last time it happened, they blamed it on their new second source supplier, Luk. The Aisin clutches didn’t have any problems if I remember correctly. I ended up going the aftermarket route with a centerforce stage II and have been loving it. The stage II was the same price as a stage I. I thought about getting their dual friction clutch for an extra $150 or so, but that seemed overkill for my 2.7L. Good luck and let us know how it all turns out!

Would there be any issues if I start accelerating in 2nd gear at a complete stop? Also, if I am coasting in neutral with clutch disengaged, would that be a problem? For example, I’m in 4th gear, I clutch+shift to neutral, fully disengage clutch, coast, and brake without engaging clutch.

That's been pretty f*cking obvious with this new generation.

Neither of those situations should hurt the clutch.

I mean, a second gear start from a stop every once in a while won't do much, but if he does that all the time it could definitely shorten clutch life.

2nd gear starts without question cost more clutch life than 1st gear starts. If one does this on a regular basis it would not surprise me at all to see clutch life severely diminished. 2nd is pretty tall in this truck and a decent amount of slip is required to get it moving from a complete stop straight into second.

Is that why your clutch is toast at 11k miles? Maybe. Impossible to say really but if you are aggressively starting from a complete stop straight into 2nd every time...yeah probably.

I also dont think its your fault.

My 17 TRD OR has almost 40k on it. I have slipped the clutch sooooo many times trying to get out of shit. I have also taught 3 teenagers how to drive manual on it. If my clutch is still going strong then there is no reason yours should be out at 11k.

I never understood why people drive that way. I can see that you have no performance driving experience. Not that you should be driving everyday as if youre on a race track, but for response, braking, and emergency situations its best to keep it in a gear.

If I'm just coasting to a stoplight? Hmmm...

Thanks for the info. I will definitely start shifting from 1st. I still don't think it would have totaled my clutch after 11,000 miles of mostly highway driving, though

I tend to agree but I'd have to see in person how you are starting in 2nd. It's possible to start in 2nd with minimal clutch wear but it's also easy to use a lot of clutch starting in 2nd. I mean it's pretty simple at the end of the day. Slip costs clutch material. High force during the slip costs even more clutch material.

I don't think anyone asked the OP if he's the only driver? You can baby it, but your teenage son might not be so careful.

My 84 had over 100,000 miles on the original clutch.

    Irrelevant.

Your 84 had much better build quality than these new shit boxes.

My 87 is a freakin tank. The panel alignment, ruggedness, and general fit and finish is light years better than what we get these days.

Downshift to a gear by rev matching and use the engine to assist with braking.

I love this pic. I've got 3 Tacomas sitting in my car park right now, but would drool all over that 84. 22R or 22RE? Can't see the emblem on the c-pillar.

You don’t think there will be 3rd gens here with 150k on the stock clutch?

    Your rebuttal seems irrelevant...
