So, are 99% of the trucks ok but every once in awhile one is bad? Or are they all "bad" and just you guys are going in to have it addressed?

They all have the issues. Some guys just live with it as a matter of course. Doesn't make it right. I'm one of the "Live With It" guys, but I'll be having this done ASAP. This so called design was just for the EPA stuff. They are finding out now that it might have been overdone.

I can only speak for myself. My choice of purchase was down to the 2018 Colorado or 2018 Tacoma mid-sized PU...and I test drove both extensively. The Tacoma won hands down, but the confused shifting and the low hanging exhaust aft of the transfer case were definitely areas of concern. The first was addressed "enough" with the latest software update and the latter will be addressed this week. I am of the "opinion" that the confused shift pattern (as I call it) is/was a result of trying to eeck out better mpg used in conjunction with the Atkinson Cycle engine. Whether or not this is the case...who knows, but the latest s/w update did normalize things enough "for me" to sign off on this fix. YMMV

Your "opinion " is right on target. I heard almost the exact words from the "area Toyota service rep".
Also I had the latest 2 TSB's done -- It has definitely changed the way my truck (for the better) shifts.

It's not about trucks themselves being good or bad, it's about the fact that Toyota didn't have a well-built out "operating system" ready for these trucks and have had to continue to improve it over the last 3 years. Most trucks run "fine" but are not running optimally on the original factory tune/calibration.

Granted the source of this is from OVTune but it does give you some visual and understanding to some of the challenges that frustrated many owners tied to the prior versions of the ECU, much of which the new TSB helps address.

    https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/2gr-fks-toyota-tacoma-bringing-new-life-to-the-tacoma-platform

Note this was written before the latest TSB was released and since the TSB did address many of these issues, one could glean some of the conclusions in this blog post were spot on enough for Toyota to make significant changes.

    None... sigh
Called to set an appointment at my dealer for tomorrow, was told that the tech would have to be able to replicate the issue before they can perform the TSB. So I'll have be sure to explain in detail the situation. With all the praise I want this done. I'm hoping it will correct the transmission when it is excessively hot/humid outside, my truck honestly feels like shit when it heats up.

I was told the exact thing for when I go in Saturday. Hopefully it does the issues! They get me all the time with the “we can’t replicate the issue” I feel once the go from park to drive, and they see it takes a few seconds for it to grab...they won’t say anything and do it.

I experience a quick stumble (a hesitation not a lag) upon going from stop to full throttle on my 2017, and I'm in Charlotte so no high altitude needed to feel it. I plan to take mine into the dealer in a few days.

My shifting is considerably better after having the update with no stumble on hard acceleration. The only problem mine continues to have is the lack of decision when on the highway at about 115 KM/H. The constant shifting between 6th, 5th, and 4th gear is infuriating with any incline.

Just had the TSB done today (0062-18). Drives sooooooo much better. When I turn up my street, it has always surged....not today! Feels like a "normal" AT.

Is the TSB for this considered a transmission thing? I got dropped my truck off a couple days ago and it is getting the BDS 6" lift and i just saw this post today. Will they give me the voided warranty speech?

Why do dealerships need to replicate the issue for something like this? Its a TSB, shouldnt they just do it? Wouldnt it be quicker to just flash the ECU than try and take the truck out for a test drive to replicate? I dont get it...

    not how warranty stuff works.

dealers submit warranty work back to toyota for reimbursement. they run the risk of doing a tsb update without proving it was needed by replicating the symptom. then toyota deciding not to pay the dealership for their time. some dealers are more willing to take this risk than others or know how to get around the system to make sure they get paid.

i've always found it better to go to the biggest dealer in an area for warranty work.

It's a funny world. If they get reimbursed for the "work" it says they are paid for 0.4hrs of labor. Which is very reasonable and in line w/ what I'd expect though if they have all the tools handy it should only take them 10 minutes max, it could take 10 mins to get techstream setup and whatnot.. Still some dealers will spend more time contesting the customer complaint than the damn 20 mins of work to update it.

Got my truck flashed yesterday and the dealership never mentioned needing to replicate the issue. Drove my truck like I stole it to test it out and it drives so much better. No delay in acceleration and no longer need to use the ECT to merge with traffic. Also haven’t had the truck stumble anymore.

They asked me to describe what was happening. Said they had to have that before they could perform the TSB. No test drive.

I just called my dealer and explained the 'stumble' and lack of power coupled with hunting for gears and losing speed on hills. Mine is a 2018 two weeks old. So at first I thought it was going from a V8 to a V6 and the fancy new AT that has the ability to save the whales and forests of the world with an improved EPA ...joined the forum and learned otherwise. My update is being done tomorrow at 6PM EST and I will update after here.

I will be asking for T-SB-0062-18 EG1811 and showing them the TSB in hand.
