I see the paper gaskets in the background on the bench. Did you just use rtv on the transmission adapter?
The instructions show rtv, but the kit came with two paper gaskets. I was thinking about coating the gasket with rtv but it looks like it could interfere with oiling? Anyone know what is best here and do you have to worry about the second shift rod hole that is left open?

 

I used grey, no leaks from my TG setup. Antiseize on the coupler, looked great when I took it apart after a couple years of use.

My TG setup doesn’t leak a bit. I think the clockable inchworm adapters are a motherfucker to keep from leaking.

I typically just run whatever is laying around the garage with no issues. 75-90 is factory

 

TG has a pretty solid instruction set for their stuff.

Jim retired and sold inchworm back in 2013 to Low Range...a lot of stuff had been discontinued or on perma-out of stock since. Then TG bought Low Range so it didn’t make sense to have redundant product lines. Sad to see a vendor exit the scene but sadly that’s how it’s been going in the older Toyota world lately. A lot of the OG guys have either died or retired and their products went with them.

 

I run the thickest I can find. Its a bit quieter and with how hot the thing gets on the highway, i figure it can't hurt.

 

I have had bad luck with paper gaskets and the ultra grey stuff. I use "the right stuff" by permatex. The craps awesome until you have to take everything apart lol.

 

It’s weird how much hotter yours runs than mine. I could barely feel any heat through through the floor pan when it was just bedlined.

I swear by the right stuff now. It is like glue when you need to take things apart though...had to beat the fuck out of my oil pan to get it off after I used it. Only reason it’s not in my duals is that they haven’t been apart in a while

 

Part of my heat issue is I think it's because my floor is sealed like shit. Also my crawl box and transfer case share the same fluid, that may be part of it as well.

 

I am going to be applying lizard skins ceramic coating and their damping material. Hopefully that will cut the noise and heat.

I am also going to make a new shift boot with foam or thick quilt like material to cut down on noise. Gotta talk to my interior guy first.

 

When you have the interior pulled to get the lizard skin on it couldn't hurt to add some butyl sound deadening over it. My rig was sound deadened before the install and I can barely here the crawlbox. I'm running 75-90 now but might change that up to 85-140 when I do a drain and fill in a few months.

The only issue I've had with mine is the crawlbox popping out of gear in lo/lo. It's happened twice. I didn't put the HD springs in because it seems a lot of guys don't ever have the issue. I just got some ordered up from Yotamasters and will put one in the crawlbox. It's gonna be super fun trying to get that out and installed with the box already in my rig. lol

 

I forgot you’ve got a lefty that shares fluid. Sealing up the floor makes a big difference for sure too.

The only time ever hear my cases when one of them is in low range. Totally invisible otherwise...even without carpet or vinyl.

My 4.7 box will pop out if I’m feathering the throttle just right...has only happened a handful of times. Totally because I didn’t throw in a new spring or stretch out my old one when I put the cases together. Dragging my feet because I do not want to do it in the truck too.

 

Mine is pretty noisy and hot driving around town and especially on the highway (can hear the gears whirling) but ive grown use to it at this point. I have a metal cover on the center console over the shifters and during the summer (vegas 100-115) it gets pretty hot but not as bad as the shifters and I can still touch them.

And I have the same problem with my crawl box popping out of gear in low/low. To the point I cant tell you the last time I used it and its just kind of there now. Sure part of it popping out is because the shift boot pulls on it a little but its hard to get into gear and sucks when it pops out.

One problem that does annoy me more than anything is lately when I go to put the main case into low (4.7), I put the truck in neutral, shift the tcase to the middle or neutral and then whenever I try to go into low it just grinds like something is spinning still yet everything is in neutral. THen I try to put the truck in park and that grinds as if the transmission still has power/in gear. ANyone else experience this? 3.4l. Auto a340e.

 

Mine used to pop out, then it popped out and I almost hit a tree, that shit was fixed very shortly after that.

 

Damnit...if even you fixed it then it was bad.

Just ordered a new detent spring too...

 

I had swapped mine out putting the crawlbox together. Have both an Inchworm and MC spring, MC is about 3/16" longer but damn if the shifter wasnt hard as hell even just to get into neutral (shifter base had some oil so wasnt dry and same with the shift rod). So running the Inchworm now and see what it does after a few trips.

Okay, no need for the typical 'well you bought trail gear' but has anyone else had fitment issues trying to mate the transmission to crawl box adapter to the back of the transmission tail housing?
1 dowel will line up and the internal machined portion wants to line up but it leaves the 2nd dowel and some bolt hokes 3/16" off.
Machining is a pass / fail grade. It either fits or it doesn't.
I bought the tg because inchworm is no more and wont be supported and marlin will a) never have it in stock and b) wo t sell adapters seperate so you can use your own crawl box.

 

First time I’ve seen a fitment issue like that.

 

That sucks! I would pull the pin and run it if it was me. That's really dumb marlin isnt selling adapters only anymore. Seriously F them, I'm buying an atlas for my next Toyota build....

Unless my marlin/inchworm stuff is still together then I'll use that.
