    Firstly, the plural of anecdote is not data. So just because your uncle worked at a plant and is alive says nothing about how safe or dangerous they are...

    Secondly, nuc plants are generally very safe, and have a pretty low incident rate. However, when (not if) things go bad, they go REALLY bad...

    Nuc plants aren't like a coal plant, or an asbestos factory where you get consistent exposure to dangerous elements, and get sick simply by working there. When operating normally, nuc plants have extremely low toxicity since the fission is well contained. The problem is when you have a runaway reaction that causes a meltdown and... BOOM...

    Chernobyl is a good example, and while you can say that the technology has advanced a lot since then, Fukushima was a cluster fuck of nuclear fallout as well, and that was just a couple years ago in arguably one of the more advanced plants in the world.
