The bi-metallic coil in your fan clutch finally got warm enough to “kick” the viscous clutch in and the fan started pulling air instead of coasting. Looks/sounds pretty normal to me.

wrong, this is a very rare instance of this type of issue, its probably a sticking thermostat or low on coolant, don't throw the baby out with the bath water over 1 bad occurance like this.

Its real advice, my shitty Honda used to overheat all the time. You blast the heat in the car and the temp guage will go down. I thought everyone knew this

Worked with more than just Hondas, it was a known fix for most if not all cars.

Fan clutches is designed to conserve fuel. I am pretty sure Toyota dialed them right to the ragged edge of the operating temperature range before they apply and start pulling air. If you do want it to fun at a lower temperature you can change to a heavier viscosity oil in your fan clutch. I have done this on nearly every Toyota I have owned.

Correct video link I fat fingered the link earlier.

$5 gauge, I thought these $45.000 trucks had a digital read out in the gauge cluster, why can't that give the exact coolant temperature?

His truck more than likely already has that.

I've been driving Toyota trucks continuously since 1986, my 3rd gen 16 is my 5th Toyota and I still have my 04 that was bought brand new.

The newer truck are a lot more complex than they used to be but they aren't any less reliable.

We just have the internet and automobile forums that make things seem more dramatic now than they used to be.

My 86 truck bed started showing rust on the rear wheel seam on the bed after 3 years of ownership. Truck spent its entire time in southern California.

My 91 3.0 liter V6 was subjected to recall due to a faulty head gasket, failed motors were replaced up to 100k miles. It got me at 130k miles.

My old 99 developed a rear main seal leak at 60k miles, never got it completely fixed.

The 99 and 04 were both potential frame failure candidates.

Only issue with my 16 was a weeping diff that was fixed under warranty. It has 35k miles and has easily been my favorite truck so far.

Sometimes parts fail, sometimes conditions can be so extreme that even a new truck can falter.

I've replaced the front calipers (frozen passenger side) and steering rack on the 04.

Truck has almost 180k miles now, my son loves it. It's still a great little truck, they all were but none of the five have ever been problem free.

    20160416_091053.jpg

I just keep buying them because I like them more than the other trucks on the market.

I was running ivan Stewart tundra wheels on it for years and they're notorious for being difficult to balance. After years of ignoring a slight front vibration it finally developed too much play the rack so I replaced it before selling it to my son. He now has my old 3rd gen OR wheels on it and it drives like a dream.

Old wheels looked great but over time beat the hell out of the truck.

Has nothing to do with the engine or transmission. It’s all in the ECU programming

Irrelevant. The truck didn’t overheat. Very well could be a small air pocket. Your first gen the fan is always spinning. Not the case with the 3rd gen. The fans will kick on and off. Sure his temp was reading high, and if it was my truck in the same situation it probably wouldn’t of got that warm, doesn’t mean he was about to warp the heads or something. Not saying he shouldn’t have some concern, but it wasn’t going to be the end of the world, or his Tacoma.

 The only thing I said was my temp never goes past the middle, and I live where it's 115 in the summer. Nothing about overheating.

We have a Mechanical Fan, why would it kick on and off?
