Beware changing LSD lube!!!!!!!!!!

well hope this helps.. i had my rear end changed on my truck for a major shudder. dealer filled the new rear with synthetic lsd fluid and i had a shutter with the new rear end aswell. the dealership had the toyota engineer get in on it and he said that these rear lsd on our trucks are not liking the synthetic fluid and toyota knows about this. they drained and refilled with regular gear oil and a tube of lsd additive and so far so good.

 

Okay just got back from camping and put almost 300 miles on my truck. Did a lot of turning from going up and down the mountain and no chatter from the rear differential!!! I am happy with what I used. Again for the people that didnt know, I used Valvoline 80W-90 regular gear oil for lsd's and a 4oz. bottle of Redline friction modifier. After 300 miles and a lot of turning, so far so good.

 

Finally got the rear diff done today. The old stuff didn't look too bad. I could tell it was pink..... If you think gear oil smells nasty, that XL3 ford additive is even WORSE!!! OMG that stuff is horrible!!

Hey WW Firefighter - you weren't kidding about the flowmaster exhaust. I didn't have a wrench big enough to get on the fill plug and I didn't have enough room to get a socket in there. I ended up jacking the truck up, putting the body/frame on jackstands and dropping the axle down to the floor. It was wide open at that point where I could get a socket on it and squirt the oil in.

Drove 1/2 mile and heard 2 little 'whomp whomps' while making a right turn driving towards the empty parking lot where I did my 8's and circles. Didn't hear anything else after that. Crossing my fingers I won't hear anymore!

 

Yeah they should have designed the exhaust system a little bit different that way we could have changed the rear diff oil easier!!! I was lucky enough to get a socket in there but had to lift the exhaust a little at the same time to get it all the way on. But all-in-all, it wasnt to bad to change out.

Well hopefully you wont hear and chattering back there once everything settles in.

 

I just changed the differential fluid in my '08 TRD Sport (30k miles) today and it's got some chattering. I used 3 quarts of Valvoline 75w90 for limited slip from Autozone and I also used "Champion" brand 4 oz lsd additive from O'Reilley (Autozone was out of their stuff).

I did about 5 figure eights and it was still chattering pretty good. I've driven about 15 miles since it's been changed.

Does it take time for the new oil to get "worn in", should I try a different additive, or should I just drain it and try a different type of oil and additive?

Help anybody?

Yep.

I'm going to try to get a different LSD additive today to add to it to see if that helps. I'll update with the results tonight or tomorrow morning.

 

So I managed to clock 500 miles on Mobil Delvac and 5 oz of GM additive.
No Issues.... baby is quiet and cool.
If it is stays like that, next change in 50 k

After the truck sat overnight and I'd go to drive it each day, I'd get a 'rumble' the first 2 turns and that was it. It'd be fine the rest of the day/trips. Same thing each day it sat overnight. Rumble the first 2 turns....and fine after that.

On Saturday, we took a 2 hour round trip (mostly highway miles). Truck sat overnight Saturday night and I went to work on Sunday. I didn't get any rumbles at all yesterday or today. Still crossing my fingers for the long term.

 

Well its been a few weeks since I swapped out mine with Valvoline 80W-90 limited-slip gear oil with 4oz.'s of Redline friction modifier and no chatters or rumbles so far. Hopefully it stays that way.

 

Last night I added in the Motorcraft friction modifier that I picked up from the Ford dealership.

A few rumbles when I first started, but now it appears to have mixed in and fixed my problem. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't chatter anymore!

With that said, I would not recommend using the "Champion" brand friction modifier that O'Reilley sells, as it seems to not prevent chattering.

 

I've got a couple of days of driving with the Redline under my belt and I must say there is indeed less noise. The temp gun mentioned earlier in this thread (from Amazon) has showed a consistent 6 degree drop in temp after my 20 mile commutes, so thats probably not showing a significant improvement, but still interesting.

 

Jack this again: We'll Toyota does not supply buildsheets, which is kind of lame, but I did get my answer. No LSD on my truck. So glad to not have the chirpiness others have.

So you are getting some chattering with the Redline?

 

No chattering at all. The only sound now is when I first back out of garage onto sealed asphalt and make a moderately sharp turn to leave the driveway first thing in the morning. What I do here is a soft rub or hum sound which may be the worn out gy 245s. I've become so paranoid and oversensitive that I really feel this is nothing to worry about. I think the nature of an LSD mechanically is gonna cause some rub as the internal clutch mechanism attempts to distribute and balance some torque to both wheels. I think the Redline is the best so far of the 3 lube setups I've tried and I'm gonna stick with it. Tired of pissing away cash.

 

Recap: I have Royal Purple in the diff, got some chattering, added some of this stuff and now finally good to go!!

 

I just got off the phone with the local toyota service guys. He told me that toyota has recently reformulated the LSD fluid. He quoted me $75.00/L.....not including labor....WTF. Has anybody else heard of this?
