Of course, you can't beat the advice of install a scangauge and watch your temps on an AT. But if you're towing something big enough that you have to stop and let things cool, you should probably consider a different truck if you tow often.

Not knowing your level of mechanical aptitude I opted to err on the side of caution and explain why I'd changed it.

The torque converter will not lock up on a Tacoma in 2nd gear. You cannot use a Tacoma to pull at max tow capacity (6400lbs) on long steep grades and high ambient temps without overheating the tranny with the stock tow package. There is nothing you can do in terms of driving technique that will stop the tranny from overheating.

I think you may have to drop your WD hitch down a couple of holes. The trailer looks a little high on the front.

Haha, I agree, this pic was right before I put them down a link.. I left the scale and spun a rear tire in the gravel.. a little tight I think.

before setting up a WDH, measure the front AND rear wheel to fender spacing before you drop the tongue weight onto the truck. after dropping the weight on and connecting the WDH, measure again and take the differences... you do NOT want more drop in front then in back, or you've put way too much force on the WDH.

Also I've always been taught to keep the Equilizer bars level to the ground - in that pic you can see the 800lb bars are bent up to the trailer..

And that's the confusing part. I have a Equilizer hitch and the manual says to never use less than 4 washers under the pin. With the washers in the hitch head is sloped back and when you put the bars in they are not perpendicular to the ground.

Interesting. I thought dropping the A750F into 4th, or 3rd, or 2nd LOCKED the torque converter as the default. Goodbye to that ignorant theory.

Anyway, the reasons I went to autotrans for towing is because the 4.0l was a bit weak IMO, 4.7l V8 is better, and only available with an auto. Also I was burning up my clutch offroad trying to maneuver the trailer even in 4LO. And downshifting on a steep grade, I'd lose 5mph with each downshift. The bottom line though was the 4.7l sounds so damn nice when I put my foot into it.

If you have the square bar Equalizer then you need to drop the L bracket on the trailer tongue down until the bars are level with the tongue. But that means to get more tension you may need more than 4 washers. I run 7 washers.

Just picked up this guy, my first time towing anything much bigger than a small utility trailer or a single jet ski. It towed well on a 41 mile drive partially through town and then about 55mph I averaged right around 18mpg.
