It’s pooled R&D. Companies often trade technology. It happens all the time in my industry. We will develop something that isn’t particularly useful to our portfolio and someone else will do the same, so we trade technology if there’s an advantage to us in gaining their surplus technology. People are just so used to American auto manufacturers not doing it that they assume that it’s not something that happens in the auto industry.

Same reason Toyota re-skinned the Z4 as the Supra - because there's no profit in the segment for Toyota to justify spending a few $ billion to design its own.

We just had a bunch of Aussie’s here for a field tour. It was sort of an internal employee exchange tour. In Australia the truck on the farm are all either a Hilux or Ranger. I say it in singular because when you work out the math they are paying almost 60k USD for a mid range option package Ranger or Hilux. They couldn’t believe we can get V8 trucks for under 40k. One guy even said a newish import F150 Lariat is worth over 100k!

^Competition in the US I guess? :notsure: Can't think of a good reason why they are priced so high in Australia, when the trucks are made for cheap in Thailand.

They said there are also government taxes on vehicles that are deemed to be excessive, mainly trucks and commercial vans. Plus without a full sized market there isn’t really a ceiling for pricing.

The one guy who rode around with me for a few hours also mentioned that the F150 has way more power and handles farm roads way more smoothly than a Diesel Hilux or Ranger. I found it funny considering how many guys on here would give there left nut for a Diesel Hilux lol.

I'm betting that's apples-to-oranges, a SR or XL to a Lariat or whatever. An unloaded F250 poverty spec work truck rides like shit, too. Keep in mind that down under Hilux and Ranger are their commercial trucks and can be configured to 3,000 kg GVWR, which is nearly 1,000 lbs more payload than a Tacoma but in a similar sized truck. How do you imagine the ride would be in a Tacoma with Deaver 10-leaf packs if you took off the swing out bumper, RTT, all the armor? Terrible. Anyway, I just want a Diesel engine, Tacoma or Hilux. I would prefer the Hilux for the boxed frame and metal bed, but whatever, in the end you build what you need anyway.

Agreed, a F250 rides like shit. However we were comparing our company vehicles. He gets a Ranger and I get an F150. I simply found it funny that he would prefer my F150 XTR over his Ranger in a similar trim after riding in my truck for a few hours.

I’m pretty sure a Ranger and F150 spec out about the same for payload. At least I remember another conversation about this on TW where someone posted the charts and I was very close by cab style and trim. The F150 certainly doesn’t ride like shit and neither does the Tundra if we were comparing Toyota to Toyota for the Hilux.

I owned a 1997 Ranger XLT 4x4 back in the day. The 4.0 L V6 was a good power plant, plenty of torque. It never gave me any problems and went anywhere offroad I needed to go.

This Ranger might be a good thing for Tacoma owners. Maybe Toyota will step up their game.
