Cooks 1991 Toyota Supra Slow Build with Import Tuner BS

I accidentally messed with the throttle body linkage and it just didn't get set back all the way. So I'll just need to tighten it up a little bit, but all I did was just pull the linkage tight and the idles went back to normal. So far so good as I made it to work fine with no problems.

 

Keep an eye on it. You don't want it to fail while driving and the engine keeps rev'ing even though you're on the brakes. Im just glad mine failed while parked. If I recall the plastic bushing weren't shown separately on the parts diagram. I went to the junkyard and pulled a throttle linkage bracket off a Cressida.

 

Definitely going to be watching it. Glad it wasn't anything major yet

 

What are your guys opinion on rim sizes? I don’t want it to be slammed, I’d rather get 17s but on the forums a lot of people have 18s.

Also what are the other specs that’d I’d be looking for

 

Do you want a staggered or square setup? I have 18's but sometimes wish I had 17's because tires are cheaper. They might provide a little bit of a softer ride with the taller sidewall, too. My current setup is 245/40/18 on 18×8.5 +45 in the front and 275/35/18 on 18×9.5 +40 in the rear. I've dropped mine about 2" in front and 1.25" in the back and I think the fitment is pretty good. No rolled or pulled fenders, but i do rub in the front plastic wheel wells when I hit big bumps. I've got a normal alignment, no crazy camber or anything. I like the look of staggered, but you can't do normal tire rotations. I think the widest rim you'd want to run is 9" all around and you might have to roll the front fenders if you went with a 255 or wider

 

I'd go 17s, definitely no bigger than 18s.

Id run 18s as they look awesome. But 17s might be cool. Could always do the 17'' up front and 18s out back. Not too common to do that though.

I just want some turbo in my life again. A DSM Talon was FS here just recently. only 3500 but was in great shape with lots of new parts. awd turbo was tempting..

 

DSMs are literally never worth the hassle, they're the 3VZ-E of car brands. But yeah, the truck just isn't worht the money or effort to make faster than it is, so sports car it is 300zx turbo time

 

i live the 300zx a lot. Great looks. Great motor.

Also one of the most expensive imports to own and up keep. So thats a turn off. One been for sale in Billings for months that look SUPER clean. Only 8500 I think. Its an auto though..Still looks great. Be a great cruiser. But Id still rather have my MKIII Supra or gen2 MR2

 

z32 is expensive to own and maintain (not to mention cramped engine bay), those are the later ones that everyone thinks of when you say 300zx (1989-2000). I'm talking about z31 (1984-1988), looks like a total 80s wedge car haha, they're not expensive to maintain or upgrade really but people don't think of them as a platform because the information about them is largely pre internet. I love them though and have helped build two now so I know they aren't bad to work on. Looking at a 1986 model on Friday

 

Ah gotcha. Saw one on the hwy to work yesterday believe it or not. Look all original. not a cool looking. Like the MKII Supra haha think the 280 is better than than that one

That does look really damn good. One big thing is I don't want to have to roll the fenders, rather keep those how they are. Probably won't drop it as I like the ride height. So maybe do the setup you have (different rims as I don't like directly copying people).

If you like the look of your current wheels, you might be able to find some stock wheels off of an MK4 Turbo. Those are 17×8 in the front and 17×9.5 in the rear.

 

Nah I like the Volk TE37 but not going to pay $500 for one so I'm looking at similar ones. But I'm open to other styles

 

$500 per wheel is a deal! Usually the ones I see (18's) go for almost $1000 each. If you don't mind reps, Varrstöen ES2 and Rota Grid are two that are styled the same as TE37's. I think they're available 17"-19"

 

Hah well I guess I meant to say that I don't want to pay $500 per wheel. I'll check those out, I've heard of the Varrstoen ones before.
