Im buying a new Tacoma, went to the dealership to get a 4Runner, test drove a Tacoma for the hell of it and like it so much better. I live in Colorado, the truck will go off road a lot.

One dealer will sell me a 19 Pro for MSRP. I love that truck, and that I really won’t need to modify anything on it. I would have to wait 3-6 months to receive it.

Another dealer is suggesting I buy a base model 18 off road, they would lift, put in leather heated seats, PRO grill, wheels etc. We haven’t gone through all the details but they say I can customize it, pay less than a pro and have a better truck.

On one hand I like the idea of not touching a pro from the factory. On the other it would be cool to have a unique truck. I’m torn.

I suppose another option would be to buy a base model Trd off road and have a 3rd party do all the customization.

    Thoughts?

Depends on the cost of all the add ons you want. OR is the better value, but by the time you add all that stuff you may be in the Pro price range. I definitely favor the OR, but it’s just my opinion.

If you plan to keep your truck stock. Get the Pro. If you plan to modify. Get the OR.

The dealer addons and mods are generally covered under warranty but they are usually cheap lifts and charge large premiums for them.

Personally; I went with the OR and customized it myself.

If you got the dough and plan to do all mods the pro has, i say get the pro. Otherwise, get the OR and mod it the way you like it. Also, look into clazzio leather seats, your dealer will charge you an arm and a leg for "toyota leather seats" it won't be worth it, same with a lift, they will likely throw it on blocks and say there ya go.

If money and the wait time are not a big concern, go with the 2019 Pro. A year younger in truck life and a hell of a truck. But if you don't want to wait for the Pro, the 2018 OR is a pretty good option as there is not supposed to be many changes 2018 to 2019 on the sub Pro models. A little electronics is all I've read. As far as the dealership doing mods for you, make sure you're getting what you want. If it where me, I'd take it stock and drive it a bit before deciding what exactly to upgrade, and actually a stock OR is pretty darn good.

You can get a 2018 OR with the premium package that has leather seats, so look into that cost vs. whatever the dealer is planning on installing.
Definitely get a breakdown of parts and cost for the lift they are wanting to use also.
Get all the info and then do a side by side comparison of cost and quality of materials, then your decision will be made fairly easy.

Unless you are picking out the parts yourself for the TRD, don't take the dealers word that you'll be getting anytning "better" than a PRO with their parts. It's likely a crappy spacer lift and some other junk they will overcharge you for.

One thing to keep in mind, I would think that the Pro will have a better trade-in value than the modded Off Road. Doubtful you would get much credit for the mods.

By the time the dealer tacks on their mods, you could prolly buy 2 pros.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. My gut was saying go with the pro and this validates it for me. The only modification I will make to the pro is getting some sliders eventually but will stay stock other than that.

If that's the case, I'd definitely go Pro. I don't understand people who buy a Pro then lift it immediately, along with other mods.

None, finally back in a Taco
I had the money for the Pro, but drove both and opted for the OR. There could be a million arguments for either one, but for me it came down to driver experience and sustainability. MOST of us spend the majority of our time on streets and I was more comfortable in the OR as a daily option.

Also, i would be extremely hesitant to modify a pro as I feel it is a very turn-key approach. I am not at all hesitant about making my OR my own. Drive both of them if the dealer will allow it, mine even let me hit some minor offroad scenarios.

For those that speak up about resale value... I have owned three ORs now and traded every one of them for within 1k of what I paid 2-3 years later. Private party sales is the only option to gain aftermarket upgrade cost back. But Tacos are Tacos and you will never run out of options to offload at industry leading value.

I just found out the 19 TRD Pro comes standard with a moonroof. Guess I am going off road and customizing now.

Talking about Pro vs. OR is about as volatile as talking politics on a forum these days ;)

Pro = if you really want it for the exclusiveness of the trim and the mods it comes with already, then go for it. if you can wait that long, that is. very nice truck
OR = you can do a LOT with a OR truck for the difference in cost. wheels, tires, lift, etc.,

For me one of the biggest things I knew was that I was going to have to invest a few grand on utility mods such as bed racks / rolling tonneau, rack mounts for our boats and bikes, roof rack + mounts for other items, etc., so there was no "buy a truck and keep it stock" for me.

I actually am happy with the stock OR height overall for now. I've upgraded the tires but otherwise I've been really impressed with its stock capabilities offroad and I have a truck customized to fit my needs and, in the end, Ive spent as much as I would have on a Pro but it perfectly fits my personal needs

I had heard both ways about the 19 Pro either having or not having the Sunroof, good to hear you received conformation that it will.
