Across Pomerado from it, in the Greens.

This is the view we've got from our front yard (or, had, after the fire). There used to be so many trees down there.

If you panned the camera just to the right, you'd see Escala. Some more can be seen towards the end of this photo album I made:

You can't see it, but down the hill there, 4 houses down from us, the house burned. Got a 4:30AM wakeup call of about 10 PD cruisers, lights, sirens and everything all saying at once that we literally had two minutes to get out. If it hadn't happend so damn quick, I woulda at least tried to get a pic of Battle Mountain on fire.

The scary thing was, we were damn sure our house had burned down, and didn't know it was still there for about, 5 days. We all heard on the news that you should call your house phone, and (being that 99% of phones nowadays have a DC input) if you got a message from the power company saying your power was turned off, you'd be fine. Little did we know, my brother had one of those old-style phoes in his room that hooks directly into the phone line. He always kept the volume off for some reason, so we never knew it was there. Called our house, it rang, and rang, and rang - never got that message, figured our house was gone.

Started making plans to rebuild. Second story, baby.

A hotel in Old Town. We went to pick up my grandmother, who lives in the apartments above RBHS, then spent 3 hours going the entire length of highway 56 (something that usualy takes about 10 minutes). Got to the 5 and headed south. Went to about 5 hotels before we found one that had two available rooms.

Evacuation of over 1 million people ain't fun:

And just for kicks, this is the Prez flying over my house:

We made the mistake of taking the 56, too. That was like hell.

We (mom and I) stayed at a Motel 6 downtown for three days before they let us back. When we got back, we noticed burn marks on the roof and burnt leaves in the driveway and backyard. HCW would have gone up for sure if the roofs were wood.

I'll bet. And I'm damn sure that's the only reason why my house is still standing. I can't tell you how much crap was in our yard, from small little burned leaves to huge chunks of crap over a foot in diameter. What I can't understand is how none of that caught our bushes on fire (our front yard is huge, and covered in short-lying Juniper bushes).

I wish I could say that's the end of it, but it's going to happen again. No doubt about that.

I sent the first one I did to a friend of mine (who lost his house), and he was like "that's a picture of my house on fire!!". Aparrently, someone got a shot of his burning house before it was completely gone. He lived nextdoor to Larry Himmel.

(For those who aren't familiar with Larry Himmel, he's a local news anchor here in San Diego who reported the fires from his own burning home. Don't watch this if you're tear-ducts are prone to leaking.)
