The joke is that Operators wear out their boots heels first (from having their feet propped up all day) but that's grossly misleading. Operations is physically and mentally demanding. Yes, there is a lot of seat-time but there are periods where you won't see the inside of a control room all shift unless it's to use the restroom. Work a turnaround and you're on your feet sweating your ass off 12-16 hours a day every day for weeks or months.

Additionally, refineries and petrochemical/chemical plants are inherently unsafe environments. Everything is high temperature, high pressure, hazardous, etc. Something goes wrong and people can and will die or be maimed. I've been working in this industry for almost seventeen years and have been in two major explosions, a storage tank implosion, countless fires, chemical spills, and other highly dangerous situations. I have scars from chemical burns and have a noticeable loss of hearing.

I keep doing this job because it allows me to bring home the milk and cookies and quite simply, I love the oil industry.

I believe you in you. I always do.

When are you posting the little flags again? I am leaving tomorrow for Waco for a Bachelor party at like 4ish and I want to make sure I snag one or two of them sexy things.

What color you going to do? Don't be lame and say black...

I'm lucky, brother. I grew up and still am facinated by refineries and chemical plants and I'm lucky enough to work in an industry that I absolutely love. Yes, I am well aware of the evils and the environment impacts, but dammit I love it so. I'm also fanatical about safety and environmental stewardship. I have zero issues pissing people off if it's going to put themselves or others at unnecessary risk. There is no excuse IMHO.

It's an ethylene plant. Lots of heaters. Lots of distillation/"splitter" columns. Feed is LPG like ethane or propane and naphtha. Product is gasoline and olefin/polymer products that are used in everything. That's why you'll see many olefin plants integrated with refineries.

Naphtha is raw gasoline. Smells like... naphtha. Sour gasoline.

All the smells linger forever lol. SMELLS LIKE MONEY.

But liquid baby turds? I dunno. It would have to be something particularly sour though, like sour "wild" naphtha or gas oil from a Coker or FCC. Or a really sour crude. I've tossed more than one FRC coveralls because I've gotten that stuff on me and no amount of washing would remove the scent.

My cousin works with Mobil in the Port Arthur area and was stuck in the refinery during the last hurricane. He said that he wouldn’t trade his job for anything else. Kinda funny coming from a former cpa

Me too, but with sweet crudes the H2S isn't usually an issue. Sweet crude = Low sulfur and thus low H2S. Still not something to huff like you said. Sour crudes = high sulfur and high H2S, and will ruin your day if you get a big whiff of the vapor.

    I'd believe it.

Buddy of mine is a pipeline controller, and one of his fellow controllers is a former NASA astrophysicist. Guy has a PhD too. Lol
