Is it ok to hit the redline?

I had a neighbor with a 75 350 V8 Chevy half-ton pickup, three on the tree that he bought new. He was in third gear faster than my automatic Tacoma can do it and he never exceeded 2000 rpm. He also never downshifted after making a severe turn, like turning into a side street. It was just his driving style.

I did all of the maintenance work for his vehicles. I put three complete clutches in that truck in just over 100K miles. Four complete sets of U joints. Spark plugs lasted about 10K (electronic ignition) and had to be replaced because the porcelain shattered from preignition. The cause of the preignition was too much of a load on the engine at too low of an rpm...classic lugging of an engine. I tried lower heat range spark plugs and they were of no help. The engine had an oil burning problem, most likely from digesting those shattered pieces of spark plug porcelain.

There is damage to be done at both ends of the rpm scale.

Ignore this guy OP, as long as you give your engine oil 5-10 minutes at moderate RPMs it's plenty fine. Actually it's beneficial to run high RPMs occasionally.

So you're comparing an engine from 1975 to one from 2018. Surely they must be the same

 

I will write this slowly because I know you do not read very fast. It is about lugging an engine, compared to excessive rpm, and both doing damage. You can do the same damage in a 2018 stick vehicle, except perhaps for the pinging. The computer can only retard the spark so far. It takes into account the vehicle being operated in a fairly normal manner.

 

Not to the extent of doing damage, unless it is a true manual shift automatic.

I agree with some of you that if you rev your engine up to red line constantly it will most likely be more stress on your engine than keeping it under 5k or something, however I also don’t understand people who shift at 2.5 -3k (on a standard) unless you simply have nowhere to be and are intentionally going slow or are trying to squeeze every MPG out (go buy a Prius)... I have owned mostly cars and some that are relatively sporty over the years, and I admit I’ve brought the RPMs up to red line on a regular basis on all of those vehicles, including my Tacoma when needed, especially entering a highway. Never had an issue what so ever.. I’m not saying go out and intentionally beat the snot out of your cars but geez you don’t have to be a sally about it either.... If you’re paranoid then drive like an old lady If that’s your thing. If you hit the red line the engine will take it 99% of the time without any problems in my experience..Just drive the darn thing the way you have to and if it happens to get up in the RPM's so be it, the truck will do its thing too..

The engine is quite smooth at the high end of the RPM range. Again it'll do it. It won't likely throw it's guts out anytime soon. It'll last much longer if you take it easy on the engine. Lugging is bad for them too.

 

Google the Toyota TPMS warning light.
Mine is constantly on because I have aftermarket wheels and sold the fugging sensors
