I prefer the tailgate closed variation because I keep use of my back up camera and it gets the tail of the boards up high enough that they can clear a lot of obstacles. For example, we stopped for lunch after boarding one time and a ding dong in a civic decided to park in the spot behind me and the boards resting on the closed tailgate were well above his hood and kept him from plowing into them.

I used to have some tall racks that kept them up above the roof, but they were pricey and I got tired of finding a place for them in the garage when my tonneau went back on in the winter.

I hadn’t even considered the back-up camera aspect! It’s true it would make it easier to get around while trying to back-up. I’ve heard similar things about tall racks which is why I’m trying to see what others do. I’m shorter so getting up and down might become tiresome after a while. I just want to be able to load up and go

I'm only 5'5" and my wife is 5'2" so we used to have to take a step stool when we put them up high. I'd probably go with real racks if we had expensive fiberglass boards, but our cheap BIC boards are pretty durable and the bed hasn't broken them yet.

I don't have one yet but just bought a 12' tandem kayak. I'll be purchasing one in the very near future.

By the way, you’re all being extremely helpful! I know there are many more people with the same question so anything that occurs to you, keep on sharing it bc it’s a big help to me and others.

Here’s some pics back when I had the XR. It’s the same in my DCLB now.

Thanks Miami! That looks simple enough. Maybe I’ll find some front/rear bow-stern tie downs like Whattapunk suggested to secure it

Posts like this are what make the thankful we have a municipal lake not too far away that rents SUP boards for $5 per half hour. As if that's not enough, it's run by high school kids who couldn't give a hobo's crap about enforcing the half hour portion. If nobody is waiting for a board they'll let you stay out as long as you want. I've been out for 2hrs on a single $5 rental and nobody says a word when we finally do come back in. So rad. Every time I find a deal on a SUP board or two I remember that we have to transport & store them and decide it's just not worth it. We go a handful of times per season so we'd have to rent for years and years (10?) before we made up the investment of a single SUP board.

I did a bunch of thinking on this one. My favorite option was one I didn’t end up going for.. either a set of Trac one “ladder racks” or the Toyota roof rack and a single trac one...

I looked into getting a hitch extender made locally but it was a lot more expensive than the one posted above.. either of thos set ups would be sweet..

Below is how I ended up.. but out of using the roof rack for other things .
    .
I only have the SB. Thought st8cking them out the back was a bit risky for something so expensive..

Sure have.... but it’s seems that the BOTE brand are the best and bloody expensive.. when it’s at the correct pressure it’s hard as a rock and goes awesome for something that was previously rolled up

i'm using a Rola T3 Haul Your Might (model 59799) bed rack to transport a 14' board. It's relatively inexpensive when you compare it to a Thule rack. It has an 800 lb capacity and is easily removed if you don't want to drive around with it all the time.

Personally, I didn't like the idea of a 14' board sticking out of a 5' bed.

I've heard of the BOTE brand before, i think they're a FL based company if i remember right...great boards but like you said, super expensive.
