I used to work in Bakersfield a few years ago. I live about 50 miles North from there....

Be prepared for dense fog in the winter and DRY HEAT in the summer!..and no snow

There was a lot of new development going on (Lowe's/Target/Kohls..etc.) and some new home building but that has pretty much slowed down. It will have all the shopping you need.

It's been a couple years but I remember the good areas were the Southwest and Rosedale. Stay away from the Oildale area (from what I have heard). Pretty much any area west of Highway 99 would be a decent place to live.

Not too sure about bars, only went to one and I don't remember the name. I remember there was a few bars in the downtown area. I went to a few concert's at Jerry's Pizza and The Dome. I have been to the mall and it's okay.

There is also a pretty popular drag strip about 10 miles north of Bakersfield called Famoso Raceway.

If you like drag racing, Famoso is pretty cool, and has a NHRA national event.

I lived in Bako for 2 years until I joined the Navy. I don't know what you're into but there's a lot of outdoor activities. Running at the Riverwalk, hiking in Hart Park, tubing through the Kern River, and many more. One of my favorite things to do in the summer was driving to Lake Isabella and stopping halfway in the Kern Canyon to take a break from the heat.

B town is a nice place to live over all it's a small city but has tons of stuff to do outdoors and some indoors as well. Why are you moving here anyhow??? we're about an1-2hrs from just about everywhere 3-4hrs from all the big city’s like Vegas/sac/Frisco/Diego, but back to 2hrs from place like LA/Fresno/ Ventura/ Pismo, and so on... As for bars our down town has a few the girls out here are like any other place you have your good, your bad, your hot ones , you’re not so hot :0) it's hot when hot and cold when cold.... easiest way to put it is you'll love it or hate it right of the back

It's not all that bad like a lot of people would like to paint it as. We are not some sort of small hick town in the middle of nowhere. We are surrounded by mountains in a valley and many towns/cities.
I'm not sure of the "cool" places to live in Bako. But I would say that rosedale (west bako) area and some parts of south west Bako are a good place to live. Many new businesses and restaurants/bars opening up. But not too much recently because of the times.

We have over 300,000+ people living here and with a lot of the surrounding cities/towns , It's almost a million people total!
We do have a lot of oil wells and derricks, but only heavy in the north east and some north. And far away in the surrounding towns and mostly not in town. You never really notice them unless your on top of a tall building in that area, or on top of the hill near the college.
We also have a lot of farms, ranches, dairy farms, but they are far out of town.

We have many small and big name-brand business like Costco, super wal-marts, best buy, lowe's, and many many many more!
As far as bars are concerned, you have nothing to worry about! Many bars and restaurants. And the women aren't that bad either! I think I heard that we have the most fast food/restaurants per zip code compared to most of the US.

There is nowhere that I know in the US, that there is so many places to go, see, do, on one tank of gas.
You can take a 2 hour trip east to the mountains and go skiing and camping, or go southeast to the desert (very good off-roading). Also go to the kern river and go rafting or fishing or go to the lake. Which is about a half an hour out of town.
You can also head northeast to Las Vegas! And do some betting and gambling and many other things.
You can head south to Los Angeles, only a 2 hour drive. Also many things to do.
You can also head west to the coast a few hours and go to the beach. Go swimming, tanning, surfing, etc, and also see some sand dunes.

And many things to do in the city and surroundings. A lot of areas to off-road and mess around. We also have a lake in the south west, about a half an hour out, fish/ski whatever.

There are some negatives, it is hot in the summer, but nothing like Vegas or the desert. But it's not humid, except maybe a few days. You also get used to the heat, It's not that bad.
Also It's cool because it doesn't get too cold like in the northeast where it snows. It has snowed here a couple of times in history, but It's a very uncommon "freak" occurrence. Last time was in 2000, and before that was in the early 90's.
It's kinda nice because you sometimes fell like you live in a small town, but you don't. You can be out of town in the fields farming and messing around, and travel to town in no time.

Hope that helps, any other questions let us know.
