Had a little time after work today to start welding up the rack. Bed side is all done, now just need to make the hoops for the tent and powdercoat it all.
Everything turned out exactly how I planned. My spare tire, hi-lift, and 3 septer cans all tuck nicely against the front of the bed. I basically now have the exact bed space of a short bed:rofl:

Only downside is it's a tad heavy(all steel). Good thing I added the dakar packs.

Hi-lift secured in a cradle. It sits about 3" away from the back window, so should have plenty of room if flexing.

Spare tire QD. Rod with a retaining pin if I want to remove it completely
    [IMG]

Design is not for everyone, I built it for my purpose and needs

That spare tire bolt is slick too. Most guys would just settle for a long eye bolt or J bolt. Not you. Custom or nothing.........

Looks like you have access to a CNC and/or water jet? Nice welds too. Is that all the weights it took to balance those 35's?

Looks good! Are you worried at all about the strength of the side rail tie down points near the tailgate with heavier loads? Its probably plenty strong being steel, I'm just curious with loads pulling on it sideways if its only attached to the bed rails near the tailgate.

    Custom or not worth doing:)
My work gets a lot of parts cut from a local CNC laser shop, I just add my projects onto the next order. Another perk of the job lol. I can't take full credit for the welds, I just tacked it then had a coworker do the finish beads:)
And yes, the 35's balanced nicely!
Yes, the ends of the bed rails are weaker for lateral strength. I am going to throw some gussets and triangulate off the back. For really heavy loads I have the bed stiffener points for tie down as well.

Looks awesome! I need to do something like that with my spare... currently just ratchet strapped to the bed rail against the cab

Finally got my RTT rack finished. Welding in a shop @ 100°+ is so fun:rolleyes:

I made it pop out to the side so I can still hop up on the tail gate to zip it up without having the ladder in the way. The kickouts in the sliders help alot too getting to the rain fly props.

Overall build quality is good. Inner seams are all water proof coated. Fabric is decent quality, not super heavy duty...but this is just a tester tent.

(cover removed) It sits about flush with my Pelicans. Which is exactly what I was going for
    [IMG]

And it still had to fit in the garage. Couldn't cut it any closer. In fact...I might have to air down for more clearance:rofl:

Gotta stay legal with a visible 3rd brake light. @Baja Designs in custom housing.
Also has a white dome facing down. I might do a remote switch closer to the tail gate.

    35" barely squeezing in.

Now I just need some time to use it!

It's nice when you can make something that exactly fits your needs in form and function instead of making do with what you can buy. Powder coating to match next?

Exactly. Nothing premade would fit my needs, or even satisfy my OCD. It's just high enough to fit above the spare, and even with my roof rack cases. All in an easy quick removal system. And yes, powder coating is next. This was just a final fitment and test to make sure all the holes/mounts/etc are where I like them. I'll break it down next week and spray it. Was thinking gloss black to match the roof rack, but I still have some quicksand powder left over too... hmmmm

I say black to match but then again all bedracks are black so QS would be unique.

Nice rack. I like that it's high enough to still see out the back. Now do a drop in kitchen.
