Anyone consider a Jeep Wrangler?

I'll never buy a North American vehicle. Ever.

 

I’ve wanted a Jeep forever. Always loved the look of them. Same with Tacoma’s.
I’m a dodge fanboy, I loved my Dakota and one of my rams. The other one, my ‘14, was a money sink. One thing after another, shit was constantly breaking down.
Convinced wife to let me trade it in.
Test drove a Jeep.
2018 Rubicon.

Well.......you bought a North American built and designed Tacoma......

 

I have owned both Jeep Wranglers and Toyota trucks. My first vehicle owned was a 1988 Toyota regular cab 22re 5 speed. Did everything in/with that truck, miss it dearly. Next I bought a 98 4.0 Wrangler. Again, did everything in/ with it. I then owned a 2003 Wrangler for 13 years before selling it in April and buying my '15 MGM DCSB TRD OR. All were well maintained and never abused. I did tons of off-roading in my 98 Wrangler in rural northeast Vermont. Went places on 31" super scampers that amazed me. Did the same with my 88 Toy. I plan on keeping my Tacoma for a decade or more and will maintain it as well as possible. Depending on your needs both are what you'd call "lifestyle vehicles". What I couldn't haul in the Jeep I had a small trailer and a hitch basket. My Wranglers were 4.0 5 speeds and were bulletproof. Oil/fluid changes, one radiator and one water pump, front calipers and drums on the 03 was it for mechanical issues in 13 years. Just take care of either as they are pretty bullet proof. Do stay away from 07-11 Wranglers as they have the horrible 3.8 V6 from the Caravan. If need be, swap a donor 3.6 from a 2012 to current Wrangler. Drivetrain and interiors are all easily upgradable and replacable. I have offroaded both to a high degree and I would say both are equal. Sure Jeep has a shorter wheelbase and more flexible axles, but toyotas are never far behind. In my neck of these are the two most popular woods/trail rigs. Buy the Wrangler unlimited and with proper snow tires , no worries in the winter.

 

I had a 1998 Cherokee with the 4.0 5 speed manual. That vehicle is still running around town and I bet it out last the cockroaches. Yep, I considered a Wrangler when I bought the BlueTaco. The Tacoma is not ever going to be a Jeep when it comes to off road. I love my Tacoma for what it is. So I guess Ya have to go with what Ya really want. You can spend your time worrying about other folks slice of pie or Ya can enjoy your own...

I’m lucky, I own both. Here’s my jeep last week in the Sierras. Love my Jeep too. Btw, it’s been used off-road extensively on the Rubicon, Calico, Widow-Maker, and Moab. It’s never had any mechanical issues and has always run flawlessly. Zero (0) issues. In fact, I wish my new Toyota shifted as nice as the transmission in the Jeep. I’ve always had Jeeps and love em. The Pentastar V6 and the Mercedes sourced NAGY transmission are a great combo. The best Jeep has ever had by far.

 

I never considered a Jeep. 1) I wanted a truck with a bed 2) I've owned Jeeps. Too many repairs and unpredictable. Are Jeeps the best for severe offroad ? - probably, but I gotta live day to day on the asphalt and get to work on time!

 

Solid axles, coils on all 4 corners, D44s with lockers and an auto sway bar disco. Plus doorless and topless is super fun.

Honestly I think I’m going to sell the taco this year and get a little two door rubi around 2015ish so it has the more reliable 3.6l in it.

 

I have owned a Scout for over 30 years. Because of that, owning a J**p would be a mortal sin.
I still like my Taco though.

 

I owned a 93 4.0 straight 6 YJ as a teenager, beat the hell out of it, spent a lot fixing what I broke, nearly killed a buddy (dumbass didn't have his seat belt on and almost flew out the back while 4 wheeling) and overall had a great time with it.

When I was looking at a new vehicle I test drove a 4 door wrangler but it just didnt fit the car seats as well as the tacoma. Kids are almost out of the boosters now so it wouldnt have been that big of a deal, but the biggest deal breaker was the lack of a bed; I've needed one more than I thought on Guam. Plus the taco looks 10x better IMO.

 

I have always owned Jeep Wranglers and when the JK came out in 2008 we bought one. Ran fairly well but under-powered so we traded for a 2012. Then we bought a second 2012 until the bottom fell out. Bad heads, rear seal etc. Traded for a 2013, sand in the casting, then 2014, 2015 and 2016. Always thought Chrysler would get it straightened out but no chance. Just got tired of spending my life in the Jeep service waiting area. Will NEVER buy another Wrangler. Our TRD Sport has been trouble-free except for bad battery.

 

My daughter just bought a new wrangler. Put the Mopar lift and 315/70/17's on it. It looks tough but i wouldn't have one. I tried to talk her into a Tacoma but since I have one she didn't

 

A brand new JL too. I’m jealous.

 

Not a truck. Definitely not as a primary vehicle bc who and the heck wants to bounce around all day. Tacoma resale is the best period.

 

Had a 2010 Wrangler Sport 6 speed manual. Always wanted a Jeep....got it out of my system. JK model had stupid mechanical issues..parking brake basically non-existent, windows leaked, leaky front case. Traded it in on my '17 Taco last year. Love it! More room to haul stuff to the beach for surf fishing etc.

 

I had an 97 tj that I bought brand new and had it for 2 1/2 years and sold it for the same amount I paid for it new. Had to sale it when I had a kid and had to by the wife a new suv. I have an 07 jk now that I have had for 10 years and I was planning on keeping it forever but my son totaled his car this summer and I gave him my truck that was my dd. I now plan on getting rid of my JK next year and buying a Tacoma for my dd. I got a good deal on my Jk when I bought it and I plan on getting at least 2000 more than I paid for it. I work with the guy I bought the JK from and he bought a lift kit, tires, rims, bushwacker fender flares and ARB bumpers for it and I installed all of it for him before I bought it. I love my jeep but not for a dd and have always liked the Tacomas and I love moding stuff (even my zero turn lawn mower is tricked out) so I came here to get some ideas of what I wanted to do with my Tacoma when I get it.

 

Bought a 2015 jku new had it for three years and traded back to a taco. It was really fun off road but not pleasant for a 10 hr drive when traveling. Wanted a little more space as well.
