So... I've finally got all my parts for my front 3" lift. Awesome.

Just for fun, and I mean just for shits and giggles I called the dealership next to my office to ask them what the labor would be to put all the parts on. I also told them that they would not have to do an alignment afterwards because I already have a deal somewhere else for it. (Warranty)

JUST to install the front coils, shocks and UCA's the dealership wanted $890.

Nearly 900 dollars. I literally told the guy over the phone that that was absurdly high.
He claimed it would take "10-15 hours of labor". I then told him thank you for your time and got off the phone.

So here's the reason I'm posting this, why on Earth do they not have like just realistic pricing? I mean I honestly might would pay a little more just because supposedly a Toyota Tech should know what he's doing and I also assume that they have much better insurance... But it's not a little more, it's always astronomically more

I mean it's similar to the issue at movie theaters although a bit worse. you know I actually might spend more money at a movie theater if a snack wasn't like 10 fucking dollars. I'm pretty sure they can make more money if it wasn't stupidly priced.

same thing with the dealership, they can probably actually make more money if they just charged a fairly realistic price. it could be just slightly higher than the shops around them and that would still be mostly okay.

I just don't get it though, I don't understand how they ever actually make any money unless it's just unethically ripping someone off.

For comparison the place that I'm probably going to have do the installation quoted me 300 bucks for the whole thing. And that seems pretty fair to me, honestly after watching some videos of it I'm pretty sure I could do the UCA installation myself but I do not have an air-conditioned garage so that's a no-go. Lol

But anyway, does anyone else ever think about these kind of things?

    TL;DR
Nearly shit myself laughing when the dealership quoted me close to 900 dollars for parts installation vs 300 from a local shop. Question is how the hell do they ever actually make money other than ripping people off?

Don't forget that the dealership has to cover the cost of all that lube they use to screw over customers.

On a side note, save yourself that $300 and get a few local TW guys together and do the install yourself. You'll learn a lot about your truck and have a blast.

This is the answer to your question. Contrary to TW opinion dealerships are held in high regard and charge accordingly.

They're making plenty of money with their current business model

try this: bring a T-bone to your favorite restaurant, ask it be cooked medium rare. and you would also like a table, plate, & fork with which to eat it. see how much they charge versus a menu steak.

the dealer was telling you in a nice way to get lost.

you know I never thought about the lube thing, that totally makes sense I mean how else would they be able to afford so much of it?

And yeah I would like to save the 300 but really the big problem with that is that it would have to be like in the dead of winter or something because I just can't survive outside of AC unfortunately. Unless I can get my damn doctor to get my crap balanced out.

Where in GA are you? I'm sure there are some local folks that would help with the install or you could even drive to AL and we could help you install it here.

Well I see what you're saying, these are completely two different things. The restaurant doesn't have anything that they would ever just charge "labor" for. It could be possible for a vehicle to be repairs that's just purely labor.

Plus they don't even sell these kind of Parts themselves, if they sold their own Toyota brand, or dealership brand lifted Parts I could see where you're coming from but they don't. Lol

I run a Blackvue dashcam that records 24/7. It would be "interesting" if someone let them do the job, then compared the hours from when the truck hit the lift bay until done. This is assuming they didnt disconnect the battery and kill power to the camera.

Not that I would do this, but it would be a pretty clear answer if they took less time and then charged the full 10 hours.

I mark my wife's tires every time I take it to get them rotated. I would say 30% of the time they don't even touch it before they call me to say it is done. That never ends well.

    Why are you suprized?

I would have had a comment for him when he said 10 hours to do the front coils.

Well then sir, you people must be complete idiots.

Did they say they would have to keep the truck for two days?
10 hours is more than 1 day.

They could do the whole lift in like two fucking hours.

Go to 4Wheel Parts. I think their install is $750 with alignment.

The Walton County area, that might would be okay except my schedule basically just limits me to Sunday. and as crazy as it sounds the shop that I was quoting above is actually open on Sunday. Lol
