I understand completely. I was the same way when I started with OVtune, major pucker factor. a year or so later, I don't even know how many times I've flashed my ECM lol.

There were a few tense moments in the OV threads where some guys tripped over their dicks while trying to flash, but to my knowledge NONE of them bricked their ECM.

The update wizard that you flash the OEM files with is really user friendly, and it's a Toyota product. Tells you what to do at each step in plain language. You cannot flash the wrong file with that, as it reads your ECM first to verify that the file you're trying to update with is correct.

@MOC221_ Can you comment if the power (or lack thereof) is still there post ~3500 rpm surge? The low RPM torque dips bugged me especially the 1-2 shift, but Ive been so used to just revving it up when I really need the power that Id want it to still pull in the midrange and up.

Correct. Post 199 has the 0058-18 CUW file. When you extract it, there are two files inside the archive. I double clicked on T-0033-18 (thanks to previous posters), the wizard then comes up and you follow the instructions. Easy.

Note you have to have Techstream installed (and a driver for you OBD interface) for this to work.

I wouldn't either. Get a USB dongle like the one we use for OVtune (Tactrix).

Yes, the "stock" power is still there as far as I can tell from ~3500 to redline. The ridiculous Vtec style surge at 3500 is greatly reduced, but I think one of the reasons it feels that way is because the torque curve may be more linear now. Also, 2-3K is more responsive.

Now, be careful with the dongle/cable choice. Personally I can only say that the Tactrix dongle/cable works flawlessly. In case you're not aware, there's a module that plugs into your OBD port that has a circuit card in it to communicate with the ECM (bi directional). Then there is the cable that interfaces the module with a computer's USB port. You will also need to have a driver installed on the computer you're using to make the whole setup usable. Kind of like when you plug in any new USB accessory to a computer. We OV guys take that for granted because we've had all that done since day one.

It sounds like a lot of BS but it really isn't.

I still haven't felt bad about the way mine drives. It's probably an "ignorance is bliss" thing, I'll admit.

How do I find out what version I'm running stock? (And no, fuck off. I'm not going through a massive OVTune thread to find out. Lol)

So I went ahead and flashed the update. I've only put a couple miles on it so far, however, I will say the annoying bucking and jerking I got in second gear seems to be completely gone and the throttle although slightly less touchy then the OVTune seems great. As far as power, I never really noticed much of a power increase in my 91 1.04A OVTune and so far the stock tune doesn't feel that much different in comparison to the OVTune I had loaded. The real test will be if it can hold its own on hills. Also excited to be back running 87 octane.

Right on, thanks for the review.

I'm also glad that bucking is gone. No bog either.

You can use any scan tool to find out. Calibration ID is readable via one of those.

I have a Carista BT dongle and ODB fusion App for IOS.

You are most likely 04B12 though.

    and, you fuck off :D

You have everything? I haven’t looked into modifying the ECM much on these. Seemed less fruitful than my GTI or WRX before it.
