Scangauge II and 2017 Tacoma trans temp gauge

I tried to find this info using the search feature but find anything. I recently bought a 2017 Tacoma OR. I plan on pulling a 16 trailer that's weighs about 3400 empty weight, will come in at about 4500 loaded. I have a brake controller and WD hitch but was concerned about not knowing the transmission temp and not having a trans gauge. So after reading as much as I could it seemed like a scangauge II was about the only solution. I bought one and when I got it I noticed on the Scangauge site they showed two X gauges for the 2016-2017 Tacoma. I called the support line and was told it uses both of the xgauges. I was told that Toyota uses two sensors, one on the line entering the transmission and one exiting the transmission. I had reservations as to the validity of what I was told but went ahead and entered both. To my surprise both work and when I started the vehicle both showed the same temp, as the vehicle warmed up it actually showed one showing a cooler side and one showing a higher temp. What I am wanting to know is my conclusion correct and Toyota actually was smart enough to put two sensors on the transmission if they did it's the first time I have ever seen it on a truck. Plus 159.00 for this little scanner and reader is a real bargain with what it can do. Thanks for all your comments and if this is already in a thread I'm sorry to do a do over.

 

Is there a specific model number Scangauge for 2016+ ?
Also, what's the normal driving temp reading?

The screen will display four sensors at a time. Each slot will scroll through all the standard sensors and using xgauges you can add additional sensors like the two transmission temp sensors. It is a code reader and can clear codes. It has the setting that update the unit slow, medium and fast. I have mine set up on medium and would guess it updates every few seconds. I didn't realize all sensors these newer trucks have on them. I have a list of all them I got off the website but don't have it with me right now I will try to post it later. There website is really good and their customer service is really great. It took.me about twenty minutes and I was set. That enough to get you to part with 159.00! Good luck.

I setup my scangauge today using these codes. I was curious if anyone knew where these 2 sensors are located? They give 2 (slightly) different temps.

 

TF1 is in the pan and TF2 is at the converter.
That's why one is slow to respond but shows the overall temp and the other shows the fluctuations as you drive.

I use the pan temp for monitoring while towing. The other one would drive you crazy because it's changing so fast..

whats the guidelines when monitoring the transmission temp? like whats considered high (in *F)

So, knowing the fluid temp one could use it to check their tranny fluid level, correct?

 

Yes you can.... but follow the instructions on this thread its a lot easier. ( I checked mine using the paper clip lol)

I would say anything over 250 F is getting crazy. I cant remember but I think the truck kills itself at 300F or something like that. (Please dont quote me on that!) Driving my truck hard i've only been able to get the trans temp up to 221F. It didnt stay there long.

If you go into your settings you can change it from F to C..

Edit: when I say over 250F is getting crazy....I mean you will have to change the transmission fluid sooner. Keeping it at a lower temperature will help the fluid last longer. Running a higher temp will require you to change the fluid sooner.

Edit 2.0: By kills the truck I mean shuts it down and it tells you the trans is to hot.

To monitor the transmission temperature in Celsius, change the MTH from 00090005FFD8 to 00010001FFD8. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Anything over 115C is getting too hot. I just ran over the Coquihalla here on BC empty and it stayed below 93C the whole way.

FYI. The Carista Bluetooth adaptor on Amazon for 20 bucks and the OBD Fusion app with the 10 dollar Toyota sensor package is way cheaper and unlocks all the sensor data on every sensor on the truck.
