Checking in with folks couple years later with metal particulate in oil...

I know there is a thread from a couple years ago that people posted on regarding metal shavings in the oil. More than anything, I am wondering for those who had a disturbing amount in their oil, how their outcome has been thus far and if there has been any implications a couple years out.

Long story short, just bought a 2018 TRD OR and after putting 300 miles on it, took the family up to Banff National Park. When I got to the campground, I checked the oil and found hair-like metal shavings magnetized to the end of the dipstick and some floating in the oil. I asked around, found a reputable shop in Banff (Mountain Men, excellent dudes, super pro) and took it there. They let me use their phone to call the Toyota dealership for direction before proceeding, and was directed by Toyota service to get the oil change done asap and to bring it back in as soon as I return home. Today it goes in to get looked at. The metal was observed on the dipstick at 811 miles prior to the oil change, and still until today but to somewhat lesser extent. The shop did not have Mobil 1 0w20, but did have Pennzoil Synthetic 0w20. According to the parts guy, the synthetic Toyota oil is Mobil 1. But someone on here will probably tell me they heard something else, so who knows.

Mountain Men saved a good sample of my oil and the filter itself. I am taking some of it in to Toyota (and the filter) so they can see what I saw, but I will also keep a sample for myself for future reference, and also to maybe send in for analysis. I'll post up what their response is.

At any rate, "roll call" on the metal shavings, folks. And no, I'm not freaking out.

I sent my oil in at 10k, currently at 16 I'll send it out again at 20. I didn't have a ton of metal tho. Come to think of it, I barley had any. What was your driving style like during "break in"?

I drove it as gently as possible, but had steep passes to get up. I’m sure it worked harder than usual, but I certainly didn’t thrash it and wasn’t towing anything. Every time it tried to kick down into a gear to rev high, I backed right off and just let people pass me. The first few hundred miles were in flat pavement just commuting on semi-rural I-5.

    Never checked. Don't care. It's a Toyota.

My initial sample was "everything checks out". I did pull some hills and the truck did rev fairly high but I wasn't too worried about it. I think I was less than average at being conservative with keeping my foot out of the throttle. I have terrible patience

It’s true, I’m not super worried, but since it’s an almost 40k vehicle, it’d be silly for me to not at least have it looked at for documentation.

40k is average. I know it’s a lot for most people but it’s a moot statement.

F-250s are priced into the 70s...

I get that, but it’s still a lot for our family. It’s all on a continuum.

Update- spent a good part of the day yesterday at Toyota. I specifically requested to be present when the drained the oil and dropped the filter housing. They complied with my request, and the lead tech had me witness the oil change, was receptive to my concerns, and agreed that it was a matter to not ignore.

The oil did look better than before I had the oil changed in Canada to the naked eye, but he took a bright LED light to the oil and it sparkled with flake. He said it was not unheard of, but something to keep an eye on and the filter housing looked relatively clean.

He advocated for me and requested to the service manager that they pick up the tab for the oil change, and he agreed.

For now, I’m going to keep the oil changed frequently, every 1000 for now, and have them change the oil for documentation at 5000 service so they can see how it is doing.

I've never thought to go on vacation and check my oil. Or to change it every 1000 miles.

And also when you’re going far away into remote places with a vehicle that is untested.

I see the peanut gallery has arrived...

No peanut gallery. Sorry I made an observation on a public forum. Your whole post reads like the others here saying the same thing.

Mine had significant metal in the oil filter housing when I changed the oil at 500 miles. I saw lesser amounts at 5000 and 10,000 when I changed the oil. I'm now at 35,000 and have changed the oil every 5k since new. There has been no visible metal since the 10k oil change.

That's where the dirt and metal is supposed to be... in the filter.

To all the noobs out there reading this - chances are if you can visually see the little metal bits then those are not the ones that can damage the engine. Those are too big and won't fit in the clearances. It's the ones that you can't see, the 8 micron and smaller, those are the ones that will f up a bore.
A human hair is about 50 microns in diameter for comparison.

Now, if you have big ol chunks that you can measure with a ruler, you have a problem.

It’s ok, I get it. I have a new truck. I’m geeking out on it because it has metal shavings (continued) in the oil, even after they changed the oil a day ago. I come to a forum for advice because others have had this issue in the past.

There’s dudes like me who ask questions. Then there’s dudes who like to take people to task who post as I do. So what? It’s not a new thing, it’s the same here as it is on every forum on the internet.
