Replaced the LBJ’s, CV axles and UCA’s. The stuff I had to disconnect under the hood to get out the UCA’s bolt and snap ring for the new UCA sleeve were by far the most frustrating parts.

 

I have a question for those with some experience with repairing/rebooting our 1st gen cv axles.

Should I be able to stretch out an axle so much that the rollers come out of the cage or guide they normally ride in. Is this normal? Ignore the torn boot.

This is a CVJ remaim axle that is about 2 years old and has about 25K on it. I swapped it out of the passenger side today.

Yup, the cage slides right off the tulip freely, the geometry of the front makes this impossible when installed but the boot is the only thing holding it when uninstalled.

 

Ok. My first experience with a torn boot. Good to know the axle itself is probably fine and worth rebooting.

 

Mark it so you can put it back in on the same hump

 

How are you supposed to do that with all that grease all over it. I suspect in the cleaning process itself it will be easy loose sight of which ball goes in which slot.

 

I use a little center punch and puch a divot on the end of the tulip shaft and on the outside of the hump on the receiving end

 

Ah yes. That makes sense now.

 

It's been torn for a few months

 

Yeah, it did. Supposed to be their good one too. It slplit along the ridges in two places. It is sold as a high angle, silicone boot. Paid extra for it too. Kind of disappointing actually.

 

Almost a year actually. Monte saw it first when we swapped out idler pulleys in the O'Rielys parking lot in Moab last fall.

 

Fucking hell, went to install those nice new bumps from @Plastics Guy and my other one snapped the nut off in the arm and broke off. Guess I'm ordering arms, would you guys trust Moog arms or do you think they would be weaker.

I have several friends running Moog LCA's. No problems that I've heard of, plus you get new bushing with them which is nice.

 

That's good to hear, I'll just order a set then and replace both, seems like the cheap ES bumps the previous owner put on essentially use the inner bolt to cushion the blow when the 2mm of rubber compresses So all of mine as smashed so that the nuts are broken off internally. I guess I need to find some front of the arm bumps too since these ones won't be salvageable

 

What??? The OEM stud in the bump sheared off?

 

My truck had some ES bumps from the PO and the bolt is internal in them and so the rubber separated so I pulled that off and put a socket on the internal bolt and the nut broke off it's welds in the arm. So now there is just a loose nut and bolt where my bump was.

 

Is it not possible to get the sheared off studs out of the OEM arms?

I got my @Plastics Guy bumps installed today. No drama here. If you want my old bumps, you are welcome to them.

 

Jealous, mine is gonna be a dabocle to get done in time what with moving and shit in the way too. I'm just gonna order parts right now and get ready for when I have a free day to swap it all out then run right to get an alignment so I can drive :/

 

I've done the job several times on 3rd gen 4runners. Our trucks are the same up front, if you need help I can run up and help out with the LCA swap. I have tools and everything too. No stress, easy peazy
