ATF fluid top off with wrong oil

I was one of the victims of low ATF, had 1.2 low from factory and dealership topped it off! Almost a year later I go in to change transfer case fluid and the ticket showed they used

$26 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 instead of the 75w GL3!
I have been researching these threads and it seams most of dealership uses 75w-90 for everything. I am assuming now they toped of the original 75w GL3 with 75-w90 GL5.
So what u all takes on mixing these fluids and how will this affects our trucks?

 

I can't see a small amount doing any damage at all.

Agreed, even if it was much more it still wouldn't hurt anything.

The thread title doesn't make any sense & is why I viewed this thread. ATF doesn't have different weights & ATF & gear oil are not the same thing.

The point is some dealerships might be using gear oil in the transmission!
U all 2nd genners aren't helping

No but maybe some gear oil in the radiator since according to some dealerships everything come out the same drum!

 

I still don't get it & actually it doesn't sound like they mixed any weights. Anyone that stupid to put gear oil in an automatic tansmission shouldn't be allowed in the shop, let along get hired as a tech at a dealership.

Your posts says you went to get your ATF topped off, ok. Then a year later you went you get your transfer case oil changed & they used 75w90 instead of 75w (if that's what the original is). So if the changed your transfer case oil & filled with 75w90 then nothing was mixed. The confusing part is what does topping off the ATF in your transmission have anything to do with your transfer case?

BTW, doesn't matter what gen or vehicle, mixing slightly different weights of the same type of oil is not going to harm anything.

 

Its gear oil, not blood types.

GL5 is simply easier to stock than GL3, which is a very simple oil.

I actually wouldn't use GL3 even if I had the choice between the two.

 

I think op is under the impression that the dealership uses gear oil for everything, including ATF.
I don't think he realizes that had they filled his transmission with gear oil he'd be experiencing some symptoms by now.

 

Unless he has a manual transmission.

 

Which would make the story about his ATF being low incredibly strange.

This is so confusing. It sounds like a newer version of oil came out and they used the new version. All this ATF chatter is totally irrelevant.

 

I am under the impression that there is a chance they did that!
Symptoms like transmission getting stuck in a gear longer than it should! Hard to go to drive on cold mornings! clucks when shifting down! Can't find the right gear on the highway! Loosing power when stepping on the peddle a bit hard to get out of a slow lane? Yes I have experienced all the above and many people complain about many of these issues

 

Well I've never actually heard of anyone substituting gear oil for ATF and I'm not about to try it myself, but if that actually happened I'd be surprised that your transmission still functioned at all.
You said you changed your own diff fluid so you know how thick that stuff is right?
Have you ever seen ATF? It's like water.

 

Last I remember 3rd gens are known for transmission shifting & throttle issues. Aren't there TSB out for these things?

 

Some clarity:

Toyota does not make transfer cases for pickup trucks. They subcontract their manufacture to other parties. Recently they switched to transfer cases that are made by Borg Warner. BW fills these transfer cases at their factory with straight 75W, that they buy by the tankcar load, and ships them to Toyota. Toyota lists the oil spec for these transfer cases, found in new Tundras and Tacomas as 75W, in keeping with what the manufacturer puts in there. As 75W is not readily available, many (most) Toyota dealers do not fill the the T-cases with the recommended oil during service and simply use the bulk 75W/90 gear oil they have been using for years before the Borg Warner deal. Some clever marketing guy at Toyota has found a source for 75W gear oil and it is sold at some Toyota dealerships in cans for huge money ($80 a can??).

It is unknown whether the straight 75W is needed due to some proprietary engineering at Borg Warner, or its simply the cheapest crap they can put in there that works well enough.

OP: ATF and gear oil are highly diffrerent from each other. No dealer is going to pump gear oil into your AT or your engine unless they are making a grave mistake. Your AT was very likely topped off with Toyota ATF. My dealer has told me they use the same gear oil in both diffs and the T-case and they do not bother with the 75w. That is not because they are idiots, they just see no reason for the 75W oil.

 

I hope u are right about that last part! I went in for the transmission TSB and had them do the tcase and oil change while they are at it! Figured I'd I pay them for some service I had better chances of getting the TSB done without complaint. Wich by the way they did try to say that all the transmission issues I'm experiencing is due to the 265/75r16 p rated tires I have on. Tech said he topped off my transmission fluid did the TSB and replaced the tcase with

Now they had the truck overnight but I called at 2 pm I was told they haven't started on it and than it was done at 3:30 that lead me to believe they didn't check transmission level properly just toped it off with something for no reason cuz I have had it checked before and fixed, did the TSB changed oil on engine and tcase in less than 1.5 hours! So yes I have doubts they did anything right!
