Anyone have one?

Im looking at getting one but you have to go through all of the HAM licensing and take a test. I was looking at the Icom IC-V800. I wasn't planning on getting a CB because there range is a bit short for being in the desert in Socal.

Anyone have any recommendations on an antenna?

I think Im going to go for that license but its going to be a pain.

 

I will put it to you like this: I took my ham license when i was 12 years old and passed the first time. its not hard AND the fcc has made it easier then it was 5 0r 6 years ago so just pick up the study book and study the questions and answers (yes the EXACT questions and answers you will be asked are in the study book/pool)

Were did you get your book to study if you can remember? I was reading some stuff on eham.net but not too much info on were I can get information on the whole test.

 

I bought mine at radio shack back in the day when radio Shack was a "geeks" store now they just sell batteries and cellphones but i digress....

i presume you could go to your local bookseller like barnes and noble or
bargain books etc. just remember to check the effective date on the cover just to make sure that you are studying the most current topics/questions
BTW you only need the Technician class 1 to lawfully operate that radio/band (144mhz-440mhz)

 

I too took it at 12 years old. I enrolled in a class that prepared you and I passed the first time. It's a great thing to have to your name.

Thats good to know. I wasn't sure about which license to go for, I just thought the general. I think Im going to do some research and call Barnes and Noble to pick up a book or two.

For what it's worth, the Technician license is the first and easiest license to acquire of the three. General is the mid-level license.

There are some really good on-line practice exams at eham.net. Another good website with practice exams is hosted by AA9PW.

I originally wanted to find out if anyone had details on running a power lead for a 2m 50W HAM rig, but didn't see much in the forum search other than CB installs. A friend of mine has an FT-8800 in his Tacoma, and I hope to replicate his install in my truck this weekend. If I get the time, I'll take pictures of my process and try to post something here when I'm finished.
