That's what I did. I couldn't even get the lazy service writer to make up a work order so the dealership could get paid.

You need to find a better dealership. The dealership gets paid to do these and it's kind of why they are in business.

I know the dealership I go to, very few of the "kids" that bring the truck up after service can even drive my truck! Last time I had to wait for the ONE kid who could, to drive it up to me.

Separately, I'll be curious as to what they say with you having a manual.

Is there a count of how many MT trucks have had this TSB applied? I cannot consistently duplicate the 2nd gear thing, but it's happened several times and makes me think I shifted poorly. This TSB gives me hope.

the 2nd gear deal has become like a personal mission for me. this upgrade has made it so much easier. it's still a jump from 1 to 2, but this makes spinning up for 2nd much more effortless and predictable.

The 4 banger needs this, too. I'm assuming it's totally off Toyota's radar. :frusty:

I didn't realize the 2.7 had an issue.

Yep, it has the same stumble/dead-spot as the V6, especially when accelerating up on-ramps. Not to mention the awful non-linear throttle-by-wire.

I dont understand this thread. I have a manual taco but seems to drive normal to me. What is the "surge" issue?

For me its two issues. At times right after completing the shift to second, if i give it gass in a stepped manner, the truck takes a second then lunges. This one you can learn to avoid. I will chalk it up to drive by wire/lag/atkinson etc.

The most annoying one is when the truck starts bucking for no apparent reason when the revs are a little low on the second gear shift. It will be fine for a second, with no change in pedal position, Then out of nowhere gets like a dead spot and will start bucking. This one really makes you look like a noob. If you drive with the revs higher it seems to mitigate all this, but the pedal response tells me that toyota is severely limiting/modifying the command from your foot to the engine in these operational ranges.

    you have 3 options then
    1) carry on cause this doesn't apply to you
    2) realize that just cause you don't feel like you have a problem doesn't mean that it can't drive better
    3) believe everything on TW and convince yourself that your truck has lots of road noise, wind noise, motor issues, trans issues, leaking rear diff, AC fan that will blow up, needs to be lifted, has a stoopid non functional scoop that is the coolest thing in the world and you're an asshole if you drive to it to the mall cause the only place the truck should ever be driven is offroad 110% of the time with all kinds of "overland" crap bolted up all over it.
If you picked number 3 then join the rest of us fools :D

now i see. Yes, mine does the second thing you are describing. It will start bouncing. I thought it was just because the little 3.5L was WAY underpowered. Come on magnuson! Never thought it could be an software issue.

So what do I tell the dealer to get the update?

There are instructuions and the file on this thread to do it yourself if the dealer gives you a hard time.

What im wondering is, will the calibration file work with one of those bootleg techstream cables. I have one of those to change settings, and it works fine for that. Just dont know if you actually need to use the "tactrix" cable.
I just dont want to spend any money for what basically is a warranty issue. Gonna start pushing buttons at my dealer hopefully they dont waste too much time.

Edit: sorry i quoted the wrong post lol this was meant for D-Rock531

Sorry for doubting you OP, forgive me please. Anyways, at what RPMS are you guys experience 2nd gear stumble? Sounds to me like engine lugging from low RPMS. Sub 600rpm probably.
