I put 2 matteresses in the box and had to push a bit to get the tailgate closed. Now my tailgate won't unlatch on one side, I even opened the back panel and pulled on the rod with pliers and there is not way that the latch will open. I can't even get the rod to move. Is there another way to open it other than pulling on the rod? I just wonder if something got stuck on the latching machanism because I pulled a piece of rope from that area. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The latch has pressure from the matress you put in! Just lean on the side that stuck, or have someone push on it while you pull on the rod, the latch should open!

I've heard of it not opening if it's unlatched on one side... try putting both back onto the latched position before opening again.

The bed is not in the truck anymore, I push all i want and there is no way it will open. I even opened the back cover and pushed on the back while pulling the rod with pliers and that won`t work.

Mine jammed when I forced it closed. I just leaned in on it to get it open.

But if you have the gate off, look at the latch rod and mechanism and make sure nothing is bent or out of addjustment, lubricate with spray lube

Mechanically adjust the latch rod with a hammer

I tried everything and there is no way that it will open. I think there is something stuck in the machanism that's preventing it to open. I pried it with a screwdriver and everything else to no avail. Now is there a way to rip it off without breaking my tailgate, I feel like cutting it with a dremel tool. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

is it stuck on the same side where it lifts up when your taking the gate off?
that would be the passenger side.

try taking it off if you can. if not then maybe disconnect the rod from the tailgate handle and try pulling it back out

Finally figured it out. I'll explain in case someone else ends up with the same problem. The leaver that the rod pulls actually pulls another leaver to open the tailgate. I had to pull on the other leaver ( that you can't see just by looking at the machanism when it's on the tailgate), a hook was used to pull on it. What happened is that the leaver that is pulled by the rod actually jumped on top of the other leaver so there was no way that it would pull it. I bent the other leaver a bit in order to prevent the top leaver to jump on top of it again. All works fine now.

I think I might have the same problem.
I've been hauling a lot of topsoil and gravel, since we're doing some landscaping.
Now my tailgate is stuck shut. I can't open it.
My truck is an '06 TRD OffRoad.
I've taken the plastic cover off the top of the tailgate, and I can see that the handle moves the rods. The driver's side of the tailgate latches and unlatches perfectly, but the passenger side is just stuck latched.

I suspect that the rod isn't flipping the little lever for some reason (maybe there's some gravel stuck in it or maybe the rod came detached from the lever).

I've tried to push the lever with a screw driver, and I just can't really get in there to work. My hand barely fits in the little openning.
I'd like to hear more about how you used a hook to to flip the lever.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
I've been at it for a few hours now, and I'm getting very frustrated.

Hauling gravel did me in. A rock jammed the latch. I had to get the back cover off to get at it. Finally I got the rock out of the way of the locking cam.

Thanks to all, had the same prob with my bent 2008 Taco. After prying the gate open, the back covers come off easy enough, then it's easy to figure out.
