The SKINNY on skinny tires

I've taken one of those safaris, quite an experience to run up a dune and see nothing but sky then go over the edge not sure the slope of the backside.

Other than occassionally losing a bead on a tire, the drivers and land cruisers are very reliable.

 

That's what driving on some of the streets in San Francisco is like. A little unnerving wondering if someone is crossing the street in front of you.

 

I have read and searched all pages and cant get a good answer. I have a stock 18 OR with 1.25 spacers. Can I run 255/85/16 on stock tires with that spacer without much rub? I like the tire but I also want a little wider stance. No lift right now. Can anyone help me out before I lose my mind? I see lots of people run this tire on stock OR with no lift and stock wheel, but cant get a good answer on spacers. I searched 5 skinny tire threads now like every page, help!

Ha... yes... after 6hrs of reading I cant think anymore. 255/85r16 on stock OR 16x7 wheel.

 

I dont see why it would be a problem. The wheel is well within the recommended rim width of the tire.

If thats true then thats perfect. I like the stance with the stock wheels and tires now with the 1.25 spacer. With the taller and similar width 255/85r16 it would look exactly how I want the truck to look. If anyone has any other input or ideas about running this set up on a stock 18 OR with stock wheels and 255/85r16 with 1.25 spacer please chime in before I buy the tires haha Im going to start looking for some deals on tires now!!

 

I have some experience in this. So when I first put the 255's on I had 0.75" Bora spacers. Never experienced any body mount rub with them only a little plastic rub towards the front but hardly enough to want to do anything with. Never really heard it rub I just noticed it one time while offroading as the dirt was rubbed away. I later tried a set of 1" bora spacers and rubbed on the body mount while trying to see if it would rub. I drove around in circles over some bumps to try and get it to rub. With that said pta_taco has ST MAXX 255/85s on scs ray 10's. If I have figured it correctly this setup would sit out 1.5" farther than stock. He claims no rubbing, no issues I believe. I did reply on his build thread asking him if he has had any rubbing since he put the 255/85's on and ran them for a few months.

So will it rub or have issues? I would say yes it will. Other might say no. I use my truck offroad and take it places. The farther out you go with that tire the more likely you will end up rubbing somewhere.

My setup is JBA control arms set at 3 degree caster, stock OR rims, 1" bora spacers, 255/85r16 km2s (these are taller then the st maxx), OME 888 set on the bottom ring of Bilstein 5100s and HD Dakarsand and almost forgot sometimes I don't run a sway bar in the front so maybe my truck flexes a little more than others.

The amount of rub that I am experiencing on the body mount probably doesn't require a body mount chop although I am looking into it just to be safe. Even at that I would probably choose this size over 285s. Hope this helps

Thank you so much for the reply. I saw your truck on couple of posts and it looks badass. Really great information you provided. My issue is I want to run the wheel/tire/spacer just like yours but Im still stock suspension. Lift will be in a year or so. So i was wondering if this was possible on an all stock OR suspension truck. I searched all over and cant find much info. I might just have to take the chance and hope for the best it seems....

 

I agree with you, the 255 tires and a wider stance look awesome. Did you mention what tire you want to go with? The Coopers are a little smaller then the KM2s, might have better luck with those. Good luck to ya.

You are right, they are a bit smaller and in my case that might be better. So I most likely will go with the Cooper ST Maxx. They have some deals on them sometimes, so I will start looking for that. If anyone heard of any sales on Cooper tires let me know. In the market for 4 of them. Thanks!

 

Took the new tires out this weekend.

• 255/80-17 Cooper S/T Maxx
• 17×7.5 +15
• 1" spacer
• No sway bar
• 650# coil springs
• -10.4 net offset

Don't think I need that much offset, but I think it helps. Handled well once I adjusted the tire pressure. Makes my axle look wide.

 

I am so damn torn between putting 235/85r16s or 245/75r16s on my stock sus 3rd gen SR.

 

I bought a 2018 TRD OR last week, looking to increase my clearance. Assuming I don't want to lift or cut my truck, is going with a 255/85 tire the best way to increase my clearance without rubbing?

 

That would do it, but I think it is pretty mixed with 255/85 clearing without rubbing. I have read many posts that say it is possible. I have 3" on 2nd gen and still had to do some very minor trimming. Maybe pm someone that has posted in here about 3rd gen and get a better idea of what setup they are running. I would like to give the green light, but I did all the research and still was left with minor rubbing. Once you commit, there is no turning back.

 

I think some of it comes down to if you actually end up using the Tacoma off-road. Lots of guys claim no rubbing but only some have used the trucks off-road and not just a dirt road. Plan on trimming and you won’t be dissatisfied when you have to cut into a perfect truck.

 

I just went to my local 4x4 shop and the dude I talked with said the exact same thing, that people with 255/85's probably don't do a lot of off-roading if they are not getting any rub. Make sense that there would be so many different outcomes with so much variance in how people use their trucks.

 

You get the same thing with 285s.

Alignment makes the biggest difference between trucks. Get your caster high enough and you minimize rubbing on the back side.

Most 255 trimming is plastic, I know a few with out CMC on 2nd gens that wheel very often. They rub but it's not terrible. Ill find out when I upgrade to 255s just how much I'll need to cut.
