The diesel Colorado (edit: I actually like the Canyon front end way better) has caught my eye as well. It's a sharp looking truck and looks great on paper. I'd never consider trading my Tacoma in for it, the Tacoma fits my needs perfectly for now and I tow quite a bit with it. But I'd continue to keep an eye on the Colorado just to see how well it holds up, maybe someday when it's time to buy my next truck I'd consider it. It's hard for me to knock GM reliability too much I see a ton older GM trucks still driving around here (rust belt mind you) from the 90s even, but I think 90s, early 2000's was kind of a golden era for their trucks. Real solid platform they had then. BUT then there's the part of me that really would prefer to refuse business to a major auto manufacturer that somehow needed a government bailout....

Seems like quality has gone down on a lot on bailout companies post-bailout. FIatChryslerJeepDodgeRam in particular......but then I'd say Toyota isn't necessarily quite what it was in the 90s anymore either...

I would definitely consider an F-250 or something if I end up needing more capability on the farm, Ford got government money during the bailout but as I understand it it was so they could stay competitive with the other companies getting a bunch of money, not cause they needed bailing out. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways, keep the Tacoma and figure out why you're getting bad mileage, and improve on that. Towing that amount with the Tacoma shouldn't be an issue if you know how to tow, although my experience is only with the 2nd gen, seen 3rd gen owners towing weight no problem on here though..

1500 mi. It’s not even close to broke in yet. Your fuel mileage should improve some after 5-10k mi.

I don't think your gas mileage is accurate, my 2016 OR, AC just drove 15 miles @ 28.1mpg @ 50mph. A few weeks ago I drove 650 miles on 25 gallons of gas going 55-75mph and a good portion of bumper to bumper traffic, I was impressed. These trucks have to break in and you won't get these numbers in the winter. BTW, it's a 6 automatic

My truck averated around 14-15 when new. Then it jumped to 17. Then landed around 19. I forget the same xact mileage, but the mpg was really low for thousands of miles, maybe 5-10.

OP: Also your taco will tow a #4000 boat easily enough. Not sure I'd take the word of a forum when facing a decision so costly.

At 7000 miles I get 19 something no load HEAVY foot. No lag no stumble no funky trans shifting. V6 auto 2018. Friend with a v6 2016 tows a 6000 lb trailer regularly not including the stuff. Keeps his foot in it and gets 11 mpg when towing.

I don't remember where but there is a you tube thing where a load is towed up a mountain gas vs diesel in a mid size truck. Gas always beats diesel up the hill but I don't think they talk about mileage.

The 4x4 TRD's can tow up to 6400lbs. I have a 19' Tracker boat (25' towing length) about 4000lbs total and have no issues towing it where I live in the mountains. I have a TRD Sport.

My friend has the 18 Colorado and really wishes he would have looked at the Tacomas prior to purchasing his. Yes, the only thing he likes about his is the diesel engine. He gets about 24 in town and 28 on the highway. With my tacoma I am getting about 21 in town and 22-23 highway. Plus the Colorado diesel is about 5k more in price.

by that definition neither are the big 3 usa manf. I see quite a few domestic brands importing models into the usa. I think 80% of Toyota models are made in the usa. the only models I know that comes from japan is the 4runner and land cruiser since its still made at the prestigious tahara plant when most of the lexus models are made. I think you can still find some rav4 made in japan.

    edit :

    Code:

As you can see by your edit there are plenty of models being made outside the US whether it’s Canada, Mexico, or Japan.

The Big 3 are definitely seen by the general public here in the US as Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Just because they are manufacturing some vehicles and importing them doesn’t make them foreign brands. Toyota (even in the name itself) started as a foreign brand and has since started manufacturing some vehicles here in the US.

If you want to classify Toyota as being a classic American brand knock yourself out. Don’t be surprised if people don’t agree with you though.

I can promise you I am not the only one that considers Chevrolet American and Toyota traditionally a foreign brand that has been domesticated.

Bottom line for my post is... The Colorado is junk compared to the Tacoma.

Our Tacoma's vary on max towing capacity too depending on 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, and short or long bed.

Yeah I'd question that. I got passed up the coquihalla this summer by a canyon diesel towing a 6600lb fifth wheel. He could have towed that all day at 2800rpm up that hill no problem.

I know two guys with Colorado/canyon diesels. Both have had emissions problems. One was in at the dealer for 3 months last year and got traded once. Both owners say even with the problems they've had they're super happy with the trucks and won't get rid of them. Both say it's unreal towing, one tows his 8000lb trailer with it regularily.

It's undoubtedly a better regular hauler than the taco. It also has more rear space in the cab. But God is the interior awful.

Realistically, you will probably be happy with it in the long run. But it's gonna take a while to get there. Those Diesels take a long time to break in. You ain't gonna get the advertised economy in the first year, that's for sure.

I am not saying Toyota is a usa brand but now a days to compete no matter the brand, no one is totally self contained within a country anymore.

most of the main models Toyota makes is usa made.

usa only : camry is about 300k, highlander is about 255k, sienna 125k, corolla 163k, Tacoma & tundra 266k
    outside usa : corolla 210k, rav4 247k, Tacoma 104k

this was approx. numbers from 2017

generally its all about perception. hell even bud beer is no longer a usa company (technically since its owned by an overseas company InBev of Belgium, but still made in the usa)

I am not knocking the issue with the Colorado, but as you, I wouldn't put bets vs the Tacoma. now if we talk about internal production, I would prefer a vehicle built in the tahara plant any day over a usa/Canada/mexico assembly vehicle

    :)
