What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

State requires the tail pipe to exit? That's one I've never heard of lol, we don't even have that in CA and we have everything. Unless they mean a physical exhaust pipe exiting the motor? I saw a dude up in Oregon a few weeks ago that had his exhaust just straight up billowing out of a hole cut out in his hood...it was one of the most redneck things I think I've ever seen.

Anyway I have the BPV bracket and chopped my exhaust...but I thought the BPV bracket was to help with braking not with clearing the tail pipe? OME sells a separate kit that does that, FK21 or something like that.

Chopping the exhaust helps the most...you gain clearance from hitting the tailpipe on everything offroad, and it doesn't swing around nearly as much and break those rubber hangars all the time.

Hmm... mounting close to the battery is nice. Not sure the supplied cables are long enough for that, though.

 

I see. I hear a lot of coilovers don't include the spanner wrenches anymore which doesn't make sense to me.

I just placed my order for the greasable shackles & eye bolts along with Wheelers super bumps for the rear. I decided not to get that 1/2" shim.

Anyone know how much taller the Wheelers bumps are compared to stock (so I assume)? I'm running Deaver J59s, is it best to run one of their spacers for the bumps? I didn't buy any, figure I'll just machine my own.

 

Damn that BPV bracket looks nice, never knew they existed. Easy to just make your own. Drilled 4 holes, tapped two, bolt right on in 10mins.

Idk for sure, like I said, Im too lazy to really care. If I did do any real offroading Id be chopping it.

 

If you really want one, I have the OME bracket that I had on my truck. I'll ship it out to you for free if I can find the stupid thing. I ended up just chopping my exhaust because, even with the bracket I was getting contact between the leaf spring and the exhaust.

It will need some nuts and washers to replace the welded-on nuts that broke off.

Yeah I had the FK21 relocation bracket on my truck and I still managed to make contact with the exhaust and the leaf springs... so I just chopped it off lol it's a much better solution.

 

Strange. Mine has the bolts with nuts. Must be a change made by year.

 

Same here, though I never installed it. I was getting my truck worked on at a local fab shop and just told the guy to cut the damn thing off, lol. Glad I did, except that it meant losing my TRD tail pipe which makes my truck sound quieter now. But it's worth not getting it hung up on rocks and having it swing around like crazy because the rubber hangars were always tearing.

 

When you lift the rear of your truck, the brake proportioning valve (BPV) isn't sensing loads the way that it was designed to when the truck sits at stock height. Meaning it throws off your rear braking ability. Usually not by much, but the higher the lift the more it's effected. You might start noticing that your truck isn't braking as quickly as it once was. The BPV relocation bracket moves the BPV up so that it can sense loads the way it was designed to and braking improves.

Not like the rear does a whole lot for braking anyway, but I noticed a small improvement overall after putting mine on. They're cheap and only take a few minutes to install.

 

My exhaust dumps right at the axle. From what I was told by the smog shop in the next two years you’ll need your exhaust to extend all the way to rear end similar to a stock setup. For California at least.

It probably will be. The smog shop gave me a speech on why mine won’t pass next time.

 

It's for the rear brake proportioning valve that adjusts brake pressure when you have load in the bed. Some say they feel a difference extending it to length with added lift but I couldn't really tell a difference. But then again I rarely tow or haul heavy loads.

It's really easy to make. Measure how much lift you have over stock, get a piece of flat bar & drill the second set holes according to how much lift you have. I threaded the second set of holes on the flat bar so it would just bolt right on but you can just use nuts also.

 

they are supposed to compress to stock length. Maybe slightly above stock. The rubber is super soft compared to the stock one thats hard as cement. So even though it looks taller. It compresses down big time. Not sure about the deavers.
