Finally a fix from Toyota for Stumble condition (TSB 0062-18)

Just spoke to another dealer and he said he has no problem updating my truck. Thanks to those that recommended going to another dealer. In fact when I mentioned to the service advisor that another dealer said they couldn’t do it, he just laughed and said he doesn’t want to bad mouth anyone but just bring it to him.

 

Anyone have their dealer experience problems applying the update? My dealer had problems with the flash taking. Ended up taking a little over 3 hours. So far though it drives great. Can't wait for the cold start in the morning to see if the surge is still there.

Does anyone else feel that the Atkinson cycle has been partially or fully disabled (if that's even possible)? Most of the reason that Toyota went with this engine type was to meet emissions/EPA fuel standards, which, on paper, would have achieved the desired outcome. Yet real-world driving has proven quite the opposite. It makes me wonder why these TSBs are occurring under the emissions warranty, not powertrain. Or maybe I just like a good conspiracy theory..

I just had this done this update done this morning and I can say I like the change. Some things to note:

1. Shift from Park to Drive not as "lurching".
2. At highway speed, transitions from 6th to 5th are more predictable and easier to manage with throttle input.
3. Once a downshift has occurred, the transmission requires a significant decrease in load or decrease in throttle input to shift back up.

It shifts more like I would expect, it will hold 6th with "some" throttle input, but once your speed drops off it gives you 1 gear, not 2 or 3 all at once. I like it.

 

Update: Just got my truck back from getting the TSB done. It took them roughly 40min from the time they took the key till the time they handed it back. I have been impressed with this truck since the day I got it back in April of this year. I have had zero complaints and could not understand the people on this forum complaining so much about an amazing truck. I must humbly apologize to those who have been complaining about shifting patterns of this truck because since the 20 mile drive back home on highway, city streets, and interstate; THIS IS A WHOLE NEW TRUCK! I honestly thought people were exaggerating about this fix but it almost feels as though I'm driving without an E-Brake on now. I have owned a few cars in my day from a fixed up chevy truck to a 3 series bmw and I must say this is one of the most noticeable mods I have done in a long time. It shifts much smoother now, almost zero dead pedal feeling, and no more gear hunting going up hills. For anyone being hesitant on getting this done, please do yourself a favor and find the closest dealer near you! LOL

 

The video kind of reinforces what I'm trying to say. The engine is designed to switch between Otto and Atkinson cycle, depending on power demand. I was very used to feeling it being activated/deactivated. It's not unlike the GM cylinder deactivation on their V8 engines...you know when you've lost power. Since getting the update, I have yet to feel like I'm running in Atkinson mode, in fact, it feels like I'm using ECT with better shift points.

 

I'm wondering if they changed the timing of a cycle change to coincide with a downshift in the transmission, better hiding the transition.

With the low end holding gears longer and causing it to feel like we get up to speed from a dead stop much smoother and faster, does anyone think the 0-60mph has changed on our truck? I have noticed a MPG change (for the better) but the 0-60 change would be funny. Not that speed in a truck matters but this update sure makes it feel faster in the low end.

They will need to change the sticker specs for the 2019s of this is true haha.

 

You would be surprised how fast my old truck could go and how fast it could get there. That is why this truck felt so wrong before the update.

 

How would I check to see if the update was completed using techstream? I've only used it to program a key fob. Any help would be appreciated

I bought a preowned truck, meaning that, not only was the transmission moody, it was broken in by someone else, so after about a week, I was seriously considering taking it back. I don't know what was affecting the transmission more, the previous learning the other driver or the need for the TSB or both, but the update and reset made this MY truck! lol The transmission is a bit louder than my '09, or maybe I am just hyper aware of it, but it is shifting like it is supposed to, and it gets better every time I drive it.

 

It's been a few days and if I can stop myself from putting it in Sport Mode to use the SSP I'll be happy. I'm gonna leave it in and program it for Mode Three which is the performance mode. Shifts just as good in Drive with the TSB.

 

If you have an OBDII device you can see if your ECM calibration IDs ends in 400

 

For those that prefer to do the update on their own, does it require the tactrix openport cable or just one of the Amazon cable/techstream kits referenced in one of the threads?

 

Got my update late yesterday. Dealer applied the 0058-18 version which is fine to me.
Truck definitely drives and shifts like a normal transmission does. I don't feel the hesitation and that wild surge, and no hunting for gear.
Basically, we are all experiencing the new version of the engine, the way it should be.
I hated the way it behaved that I was so close to go and trade it in for a Jeep or Colorado. (I know grass is never greener on the other side)

Someone on here mentioned about some people are saying that. Once u get the update. And then after a couple of thousand of miles? It resets back to the normal transmission shifting. True?

 

No, this is a software update for the ECU. The software doesn't reset after any point.

 

Agree with Tig3r. You'll have to apply another and different patch to it.
I had the dealer apply a tsb on my 2012 prerunner shortly after purchase, and it lasted till 80k until I traded it in.
