cutting the exhaust

does cutting off the exhaust at the axle make a sound difference, on a stock muffler

 

I have mine cut over the axle. No difference. I've heard some have said cutting it before the axle increases the sound in the cab a bit.

 

No difference for me in or out the cab. I love it! No more soot on the side of the truck....

 

what about cut at the axle with a magna flow?

 

Can't speak for a magnaflow but I did a dynomax with a dump before the axle and I'm happy with that set up. Good sound under normal driving and you can hear it with spirited driving sessions

 

No, no real change, maybe a hair deeper. Modding the intake did way more for noise then that. But its not like I was doing it for sound. I just hated looking at a rusting exhaust tip.

What about heat issues or condensation issues on the under side of the bed or on the axle from doing this? That's probably the only thing keeping me from doing it.

 

I would think that the in terms of latent heat the pipe would get the spare hotter then the exhaust which is instantly whisked away while driving. The exhaust is cooled rapidly by the air even while standing still.

 

I was thinking of dumping/cutting the exhaust pipe on my 3 month old magnaflow. It seems that there are times that the deep sound comes and goes. What I mean is there are times that the sound is not as deep at times especially if the outside temp is not warm. If its a warm day I noticed that is when the sound is rich and deep/mellow. Have you guys with magnaflow experienced any of these? I have a 5X8X18 OC 2.5 pipes in and out welded.

Now I have a Wicked Flow 13SC250 coming in on Wednesday. I might have it swapped once I have a day off (good luck with that).

Any experience you would like to share from guys w/magnaflow? Thanks

 

My magnaflow volume changed drastically depending on the RPM's, and had an annoying drone at some RPM's. I dumped it after the axle, and the change in the weight of the system altered the resonance frequency enough that the drone was gone, and the system sounded much better. Sounds crazy I know....

 

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. It looked over your build, man your truck is very clean looking. I looked at how the exhaust tip does not show in the back. I never realized how slick looking the truck looks w/o the exhaust tip.

If you have any pics of your exhaust dumped/cut I would really appreciate it man. There are times I just want to take a cutting wheel and just cut it my self. Alas! My balls are not made of brass.

 

I dumped mine at the axle and it is a bit louder. Just take a sawzall to it and will only take about 5 minutes. It is super easy.

The drone you were talking about, is it the humming sound that could be heard at certain RPMs and gear? I hear something but to me it sounded more like a purrr, reminding you the exhaust is there for you.

I am thinking the drone is a resonating sound affecting the cabin, like the metal body somehow sonically vibrates.

The bottom line is I just want to "consistently (in a good way) " hear the mellow, deep, throaty sound these exhaust do.

The drone I was talking about was loud enough that it actually felt like it was rattling my brain around in my skull .

 

Getta Flow Master Super 44 and then chop it...sounds beast IMO

 

so if cutting it doesnt make any sound difference then how do people get the LOUD fart sound without upgrading the exhaust.


my friend billy has a 4banger taco he cut the exhaust, you can hear that thing from a mile away

 

He must have a cutout before the muffler. We're talking about cutting it after the muffler, so you can't see the tailpipe.
