all terrains vs muds?

Nearing tire replacement, currently running 265/75/16 BFG A/T's. They do great for road and moderate off roading. I'm debating on going 285/75/16 Mud Terrains next.
Can anyone give me their experience with doing that change from all terrains to muds? I'd like to get a bit more traction as I wheel my 2wd like its a locked 4wd (I know its limits). Always have assumed muds to be heavier but more grip than all terrains, false assumption? I do alot of highway driving as well so road comfort is also something I've considered. Going to find a locker for the rear to help get me up and over obstacles but would like to put a better tire on unless all terrains are as good as I'll be for application. I'm in the Mojave so there is alot of rock gardens, sand washes and gravel wash outs to keep in mind as far as off roading goes. Thanks in advance guys.

 

Well probably gonna be a difference cause BFG A/ts suck period. They cake up way too easy in mud. Good for sand and pavement, thats all. Go with Duratracs, great combination of mud terrain and a/t

 

i've made that same change with BFG's and the weight was not an issue. The M/T's ran just as smooth on pavement as long as you kept them maintained correctly and the off-road capabilities were drastically noticable.

 

i made that exact change with my Jeep. all i noticed was increased tire/road noise..and less traction in the rain.

 

I agree about then caking up. But I didn't was a full time mud tire. So I went with the KM2's. I'm very happy with these tires so far!

 

If this is for a daily driver.....you're doing a lot of highway/street driving - I wouldn't go with M/T's. M/T's suck in the rain especially on the highway and they suck in snow/ice.

If you're happy with A/T's....then stick with A/T's.

That's an aweful lot of money to switch over and discover you hate them.

Why not try a different brand of A/T?? Like, try out the Revo's. Or ...if you offroad a lot.... stick with A/T's for daily usage and buy another set of cheap steal wheels and mount M/T's on them for offroading. You'll be happy to have cheap wheels & M/T's for offroading while having your original set of wheels & A/T's for street.

 

How are the km2s holding up? Quiet?

 

i love my a/t's and have had very good luck with them on a variety of terrain.

 

Each to his own mine wore out and got really loud. Get the terra grapplers, much better than BFG

terra grapplers??? no thanks. very happy with the a/t's.... i suppose i'd go m/t's if i was around a lot of mud, but i'm not.

 

What Janster said is right on. If you're doing majority pavement miles, you're better off with two sets of tires. M/T's flat out suck on pavement in bad weather.

 

Actually they exceeded my expectations. They barely make noise. Great all around tire. Even on wet roads.
They will cake up in sticky mud, but they clean out with a quick press of the pedal.
Really good in the sand also.

 

Anyone know the weight differences between the muds and a/t's without rim and psi ?

Yup, tirerack has all the weights. I was wondering why my mileage went to shit switching from the Rugged Trail to BFG AT's. I should of just went MT's.

 

i did the exact swith your talking about, i can tell a big difference off road with the muds, they make a little more noise then the AT but not as bad as other tires that my friends have.... great switch

 

I had The Terra Grapplers before my KM2's (that i have on now) the Nitto's wore pretty fast in my opinion and didn't do too well in the snow where i live (nc mtns) I got the KM2's and they did much better, and they'v barely wore at all. I commute a little over an hour to work everyday on them, i also drive in rain almost everyday and they do fine, KM2s get my vote, great tire!

 

bfg at are a great tire not like someone posted earlier ,i have had both ,at are more quite and suitable 4 everyday driving .

 

mickey thompson ATZ's are a good tire, not quite an MT but more aggressive than an AT.
