Broke one rear parking sensor, any ideas?

Hey guys. So I went light off-roading....well more like light mudding this afternoon for about 5 minutes after a shooting trip and upon getting back on the rural road I guess I flung loose gravel and mud from my tires and my second rear sensor from the left broke. WTF! I say it was the loose gravel and mud on the tires because that's when the warning was shown on the dash.

Any way, I found a new OEM replacement sensor here but it's $162.64! eBay sells a similar sensors for the Tundra & RAV4 for $21. Does anyone know if they work on the Tacoma? Any ideas what the 501 MCD on these replacements VS. 506 MCD (on the tacoma) means, or if it matters?

thx..I just saw that one but I need the retainer clip as well. Interesting, I see many dealers online still selling 89341-0C011.

OK. So I decided to take the plunge and buy $20 one from Amazon supposedly meant for Tundra instead of the $160 version meant for the Tacoma. Sorry I forgot to take photos prior to installing it.

I was skeptical once I opened the package because where the old one says DENSO, the new one is all blank. However it did say Toyota and a number on the side.

The bracket comes in two pieces and one piece is the flimsiest POS I've ever seen, no wonder it broke off with a little bit of mud hitting it. I broke a few of the tabs off while installing it so we'll see if it holds. The device took care of the warning in the dash and I tested it by backing up to my garage door and it seems to work OK. I'm sure the actual $160 version has some tweaks for the Tacoma but I'll keep my cheap version. As a matter of fact I just ordered and another one. If the one I put on falls off, I'll loosen up the plastic bumper to get a better install.

I just need the retaining clip, I broke one today adjusting my rear bumper to get rid of the Taco gap...

 

I can't believe Toyota uses something so flimsy.

After I installed mine I figured it wouldn't hold so I bought the one meant for the tundra but so far it has held in place. You might want to take a look at it and see if it works. I think it will with some modification.

Yes, they are the same. Same flimsiness too. I broke some of the tabs on the new one as well, but it has held in place so far. Then again I have not been offroading/mudding since. That's why I bought the tundra one, it is way more sturdy but it needs to be modified some I think.

I broke some of the the new one's tabs because I could not get my hands up there to place everything right. If the bumper were take off it would be easier.

Update: The $20 parking sensor has been in place since January and has given me ZERO issues or errors. I have not noticed any difference in sensitivity or accuracy during my daily driving, backing up, and parking.

The sensor is still being held by it's flimsy POS clip with half broken tabs. I have not gone off-roading or mudding, when I do I suspect it may fall off. I'll then modify the Tundra retainer clip for a more permanent fix.

Not sure why Toyota wants to charge so much for the "3rd Gen Tacoma version". I doubt the sensors change much from vehicle to vehicle as it's probably all software driven.

 

How involved was the replacing of the sensor? Local stealership wants to rail me for 500 bucks to replace a sensor.

 

Can't really add to what is in my previous posts about it...it's easy but the retaining clip is super flimsy and breaks easily. But you could go through several $20 sensors and still save money. Mine has given zero me issues.

What he really needs is your rear bumper. Matter of fact, I do too!

 

Good luck taking off the sensors without breaking the clips. Once you do they can't be attached.

Things made me lazy though, with the steel back there with no camera, I am worried about destroying a small car now in town
