Just Installed a Powertrax No Slip AKA Lunchbox Locker in my 2nd gen

I give you full credit for the idea of a lunchbox locker. You've been wanting to do it longer than I have! You just convinced me to pull the trigger before you did.

So with one of these if you have one rear tire in the air and try to accelerate the rear will be locked, right?

 

Yep, that's correct! The video I'll get at Rausch will illustrate that perfectly. Of course when I go, I'll be sure to post in here.

 

The way a mechanical locker works is it has to overcome spring pressure to "ratchet" they are permanently locked together until that happens. It unlocks and ratchets when the wheels need different speeds like going around a corner.

 

It just took you buying it and putting it in to get me to buy one. I was dragging my feet with it.

Here’s the hill I’ll be doing with a locker. As you can see, it’s very flexy and I struggled on it with an open diff the first time I did it.

How steep is that hill looks like it's probably a lot like Dutch john at URE the video I shared of the jeep going down it. When I go up that hill I hit it doing like 10 mph and am on the wheel hard hunting for the next traction spot to pull me up until the rear wheels get traction then repeat.

 

It’s fairly steep but not that long. Maybe 150’? It’s fun.

 

Dutch may be a little steeper it's hard to tell video wise without doing or seeing them both. Dutch is Probably the same length but there is a rip rap section at the beginning and then dirt at the end with some small humps to make it closer to 200 ft or so.

 

Yeah that's where a locker shines over a limited slip diff although you could trick it by lightly applying the ebrake

 

Using the pedal works better for a limited slip a click or 2 on the ebrake works OKish when doing a really slow crawl climb on open diffs.

Was this what you were talking about before?

 

No... Well, sort of. What I was talking about was a rebuild kit for the OEM clutch type LSD using more performance oriented friction materials.

I won't bore everyone with a write up explaining all the details and theory of application, but TL;DR "lunchbox" lockers or other selectable lockers are solid ratcheting mechanical units that have an on/off sort of engagement where they split torque 50/50, whereas clutch types are more "progressive" and gentle in their engagement, depending on friction material and spring strength.

It's really just like upgrading the clutch in a manual transmission, you're making the friction surface more bite-y and aggressive.

 

Which LSD would you add? After ‘08 all the LSD’s in these trucks are really just simulated with brakes and electronics so the diff is still technically open.

 

A pre-08 LSD, rebuilt with better friction rings.

 

I’m curious about this project now. Would you just swap in an entire 2nd gen axle?
