First off - yes I've searched but no luck to find an answer to both questions together.

My questions are specific to 1st gen and for those that run 255/85r16 (aftermarket wheels preferred but stock wheels welcome)

What width wheel do you run - 7 or 8" for 255/85/r16? Any issues breaking beads when aired down?

What backspacing or offset do you run?
Pictures please!!! I'd like to see how far they stick out from the fender.

4.0" BS on an 8" wheel. Run 15psi when I wheel. Never lost a bead. Not sure if I have a pic that gives a great tire poke reference, but here's a few.

    Stock 07 T4R wheels (7" or 7.5" iirc)
1.25" spidertrax spacers. Fronts were tucked real bad without.

Love the pizza cutters. I had 255s on my 08 taco and they were my favorite tire size.

I ran 255 85 16 maxxis bighorns in stock TRD wheels. I ran em down to 12psi with no issues.

I’m going back to the pizza cutters and an 8” wheel pretty soon.

Wow. Everyone.. thank you for the quick but thorough replies on this! Sounds like I can go 8" and air down without issues. Based on pictures I like the 4 and 3.5 backspace.

Are there still wheel manufacturers making 16x7 or 16x8 with 4 backspace? I prefer not to add spacers.

@otis24 what backspace do you plan to go?
@turbodb I've been eyeing the scs F5 3.5 backspace. Has the mud fling been an issue? Did you cure your fender rub?

It's definitely muddier than 31" on OEM wheels, but it's not too bad - nothing really gets in the bed, so that's good. I spent a bit more time with a hammer in the pinch weld area, and yes, the rubbing is cured in all but extreme turn+stuff situations (and even then, it's not bad), where it rubs about 2" inboard of the fender flare on the side you're turning towards.

I got some generic stealies off eBay for like $68 each. They’re 16 x 8 with -12 offset and some minda back space? Maybe 3.75...I forgot.

Wait I watched u (well Gideon technically) blow a bead at AOP??

I ran my 255/85s on the stock aluminum 16s and had awesome luck with them. I have ran them down to 5 or 6 psi and only blew one bead. I slid down a hill straight into an emababkment, any tire not on a beadlocks would have came off though.

Loved that wheel and tire combo, worked great and was awesome as a daily driver.

There are pics of my setup in the first few pages of my build thread.

    Haha yea.

For those not in the know, he’s talking about a slashed sidewall.

Thanks. You’ve helped me out a bit. I’ve got some Dick Cepek Extreme Country’s in the same size and same wheels I’m going to have installed on Saturday. Was curious what kind of rub issues I may have.

Also curious what you did to get your CV angle so flat. Just recently did an OME lift, and there’s a pretty good angle up front.

Every tire is different, so you may have different rub issues than I did, but I think it's safe to say that you'll have some rubbing with only 3.5" of backspacing and that size tire. I'd be curious to know how the Dick Cepek Extreme Country’s work out for you - both rubbing and performance - they may be my next tire.

For my CV's - the real answer is that I don't have a ton of lift on the truck. A couple inches max; there's no real need for more 99% of the time (but you do need to pick good lines) since the suspension cycle doesn't change with lift, and it makes the truck last a lot longer if you don't take it up too high.
