Add a circuit question

So I'm planning on doing the ram pillar mount mod, and I want to add the power cable to it. I saw on one thread that all you do is add an add a circuit to the fuse panel under the coin slot and run a 12v to 5v cable up the the mount. My question is what fuse do you tap into with the add a circuit and what amp fuse you add to it for the cable. May be a dumb question, but oh well. I'm full of them.
Also quick rant, was supposed to get my Billy 5100s today but UPS is slouching and now I have to wait another week... rant over

 

Add a circuit needs to be something that is switched by the ignition. I forget what mine is hooked to off the top of my head, but use a tester just to make sure you choose something with no power when the key is off.
As for what size fuse that us based off the draw of your GPS.

 

I'm just using my cell phone with the mount.

 

Then the draw of charging your cell phone dictates the fuse size.

 

So if you look at this pic, it’s of my 14, I’d imagine it’s the same as yours cuz it’s a 2nd gen. The lower left is the wiper motor I believe. The one next to it is power windows.....front or rear, don’t matter. I’m gonna tap into another in the middle row next to the big purple 30 fuse another power window fuse. All these fuse taps are ignition hot only which is what you want meaning only hot when the key is on. Also probably most important or it’ll cost you a another trip to autozone........that fuse panel behind the coin box takes “mini low profile fuses”

 

The access cabs have fuses for LR and RR power windows that are not used. They are wired all the way to the kick panels. If you want to get really fancy, you could buy another pigtail terminal for the mating connector and use the existing LR window fuse.

 

I was hoping the open spots in mine would be hot and would be ignition hot only.......they were dead spot and useless. If your access cab fuse panels have something different that’s awesome.

 

How would I find that out?

 

So tap into that and add another fuse of the same amp output? It's for charging my phone so I doubt it would need anything larger than a 10amp

 

I’ve always just added the same fuse in which I’m tapping into. So that red one is a 10 amp....I used a 10.....the green one I used a 20. They are both for gauges so they have minimal draw. And for what you are gonna do I wouldn’t think it’s gonna be a huge draw as well

 

Cool. Then I assume just splice the add a circuit wire to the charger wire and call it good? I'll do some research to see how much a galaxy s7 draws when charging

 

Yeah just find out what your phone charger draws....look at like this though too. These chargers plug into your cig lighter....what’s that fuse?? The point I’m making is it’s probably minimal, but check to make sure. And yes, the end of your fire tap wires (black and red) connect into your wire of which you are using for your charger.

 

It says a car charger puts out about 10 volts of power

 

I’d run it to the wiper motor fuse....I’m sure that’s fine

The back of your coin holder has a diagram that tells you what accessory each fuse fuses.

Can't just run power. Circuit needs to be grounded too

Use a test light in some of the empty slots (if you have any) and see if it comes on when you turn the key.

Safer to use an empty circuit, these things should be called add a fuse because you're not adding a circuit, you put more load on existing wiring that doesn't get upgraded usually.

And always use the smallest fuse you can
