I really need a big vise. But coming across good ones for a decent price is hard.

So I broke one of the LCAs while pre running in Baja last June, I just wanted to share this. I didn't do the welds.

It was. I drove the truck like that for like 200 miles back home.

Hello! Wondering if I can get an opinion from some knowledgeable folks on here. I am fairly new to welding, and I have recently purchased a small flux core welder I have been learning with. I would like to attempt a small exhaust repair on my truck on my own... if I bugger it up, I will take it in to the pros.

My questions is concerning ECU damage from voltage applied to the truck. From what I understand, welding any part on a truck risks damaging the ECU due to voltage traveling through the truck and into sensitive electronics. Is there any concern of this for the tacoma? In all my research, its seems like safe practice is to apply the ground clamp as close to welding site as possible and disconnecting the battery terminals.

I would attempt to remove exhaust for the best repair, but here in the north, the salt corrosion has really buggered up the bots at the flanges and would require many new parts and cutting.

Thanks in advance for any advice, tips.

If it bothers you, disconnect the neg battery cable. There will be no possible issue if you do this.

I do the same. Whenever welding on my truck (which is a surprising amount) I disconnect the negative terminal. Takes all of 2 minutes and is worth it IMO.

You only need to disconnect the ground to isolate everything from the frame/engine/exhaust

well i got my little 5lb tank changed out for $20, time to put my skills to the test again with welding cam tab gussets. printing off a little cheater chart should give me a decent idea to begin with.

also need to weld in some 74 nova bucket seat mounts, but i figure those could be more tac welds since its body anyways.

i havent welded in like 10 years  (not that i really knew much back then either though)

Rather safe then buying another ECM not so bad when it is yours

Had a friend swear forgetting to remove the negative terminal caused every bulb in the vehicle to fail

I just am in the habit of removing the negative battery terminal .

From doing so many hitches and frame splices over the years

if you think about it just removing the battery ground isnt necessarily doing much. the wire harness is still grounded to the frame in plenty of other places. granted it wont hurt to do it either. all i did when i had my sliders welded on and there werent any issues.

Electric needs to flow in a complete circuit if it can`t flow through the battery it can`t make a complete circuit

electrons flow from negative to positive. so technically the circuit is still there since the wiring harness is grounded elsewhere (other than the battery). youd have to remove the positive cable as well to not have a circuit

The complete circuit includes the battery. All your other connections are attached to a ground plane, but the ground does not attach to anything.

    Hence, an incomplete circuit.
