Does anyone know how to remove the spare tire lock? I had to change the tire the other day, in the garage, and it was a pain. The key would not stay on the end of the bar until I duct taped it. If Im on the side of the road in the rain it would be a major problem.

Question... Did you put the key from the fob on the end of the rod? As far as I'm aware, there isn't a spare tire lock

There is a "spare tire lock" option that can be installed at the port of entry or by a dealer. Has a "key" whose end has a unique pattern that fits into a receiver installed on the spare tire winch (not sure that's what it's actually called.) It's similar to lug nuts you can get that require a matching driver. Amazon has 'em.

My 2014 Taco has one. I found it to be a PITA, so I drilled a hole through one of the extension bars and the key, then bolted them together. Works like a charm, especially with the PCV pipe guide mod.

I went to google to get an image of the lock and realized I was using it 100% wrong.

did you install the key right?
it supposed to attach to the hook and mine has a retaining ring that you would spin around it.

I've never had an issue with it staying on, more so an issue taking it back off. Would need to hit it on the ground to get it to free up so I can take it off the hook.

That's what you SHOULD do. The other end of the rod, without the hook, doesn't stay on very well.
