Is it possible to change a single gear in a MT to get a different ratio?

For example, I hate the .71 6th gear ratio that comes on the 3rd gen 6MT. Its such a slight overdrive and barely an RPM drop from the .85 5th gear ratio. Would it be possible to open up the transmission and replace a single gear to get something closer to the AT 6th gear ratio of .58?

I would think if there were any advantage mileage wise to a deeper OD, Toyota would have done it. I imagine the engine can't pull it w/o you having to depress the pedal further negating any mileage gain.

    Just shift 4th to 6th.

I'm curious though if the auto is that deep, what's in the rear end?

Then why does the AT get the deep overdrive? Final drive in 6th for MT is 3.05 and for the AT its 2.27. The AT has a huge advantage on the freeway. In my MT the engine is screaming at 2900 RPMs going 75 MPH and my friends AT only runs about 2100 RPM at that speed.

That's what I do, shift from 4th to 6th. The automatic might have too much of a highway 6th gear cause lots of people complain about using cruise control

    :notsure:

The manufacturers usually pull out all the stops for mileage, to the detriment of any other usefulness even. I wonder why I run about the same with a 4:10?

Anyway, a gear would cost so much to have made it would never pay for itself even if you found a machinist who still knew how to cut them.

This is why I am trying to source a RC61F out of a Hilux much better 1st, 6th and reverse gearing.

    RC61F

4WD transmission found in vehicles such as the Toyota Hilux (2.5L, 2.8L, and 3.0L diesel models from 2015).

    Ratios:

    • First Gear: 4.784:1
    • Second Gear: 2.423:1
    • Third Gear: 1.443:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    • Fifth Gear: 0.826:1
    • Sixth Gear: 0.643:1
    • Reverse: 4.066:1

    RC62F

4WD transmission found in the 2016 Toyota Tacoma (3.5L V6 models).

    Ratios:

    • First Gear: 3.982:1
    • Second Gear: 2.017:1
    • Third Gear: 1.321:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    • Fifth Gear: 0.848:1
    • Sixth Gear: 0.713:1
    • Reverse: 3.385:1

    ????

    75mph is 2500rpm in 6th Gear.

The auto does 75mph at around 1850rpm

I suggest you drive 65-70mph for best MPGs. Or re-gear your ring&pinion for better fuel economy. Will be easier and cheaper than custom making a new gear or importing a transmission.

It may be possible that '61F' 6th gear is interchangeable with his. Sounds like the same family of transmission.
I didn't think of overseas models. Wouldn't have thought another country to be more 'economy' minded than us either.
So why all this new fangled engines if all they needed was gears?

I dont really care about the actual mileage or cost. I just really hate listening to the 'lil 3.5 whining away trying to generate torque. The wear and tear on the valve train cont be great either as I drive 20 miles a day on the freeway.

I'm already re-geared to 4.88 and on 33s so my RPMs are a bit higher than stock. That was a guess on the AT RPMs, thanks for the correction!

Those ratios look amazing! Looks like they are much better suited for for the Tacoma than the factory gears.

I tow a lot. The gearing in the RC61F transmission will suits my needs better. Now if I could get my hands on the entire powertrain out of a Hilux Revo to swap in that would be tits.

I don't know! thats what drives me crazy! Whats the point of DOUBLE overdrive if we cant have a big drop in 6th. My 2012 camaro gets BETTER gas mileage (24 MPG) than my taco and its has a 450 HP 6.2L V8. 6th gear ratio is .57. My dad has a new C7 vette and with a 7th gear ratio of .42 and he gets over 30 MPG on the freeway.

Too little torque leads to poor gas mileage just as much if not more than excess displacement.

My thoughts exactly. My 2.7l reg cab couldn't barely break 20 mpg but my 300 hp 4,000lb Chrysler 300 got 30 easily. Same for full size trucks. Ish don't make sense.

I think my 5spd gearing is great for my truck. Bigger tires might force different axle gearing but I doubt I'll ever invest in that.

If I were going to change a gear in the transmission it would be Reverse.

I was actually thinking of the 4th gen Camaro when I wrote it, 6th gear seemed to only be there for hwy. cruising. Since Chevy goes as high as they can, I assumed Toyota did too. To the point of "anything more is counter-productive" BUT..... doesn't the auto seem to always want to downshift to get 'more torque' from the more high strung engine?

I've always asked why Toyota didn't learn from Chevy about bigger engines and higher gearing since they seem to want to make the trucks bigger and bigger it seems they should know by now what works. I've never compared the mileage and gearing of the 4Runners from the years they offered the 4.7 V8.

CAFE regulations is most of the issue here. Something to do with the physical foot print of the vehicle vs the displacement = amount emissions it can produce.
I think they can get away with a little dirtier emissions if the displacement is smaller. Just cheating the system.
