Is every 10k for spark plugs excessive ?

    Thats what I did.

If I remember right, the passenger side on the radiator is the feed in and driver side is the return.

    Extremely.

Yes, out of the passenger side of the trans to the radiator. Then to the cooler, then back to the trans on the driver side. There is a picture in the FSM that shows the temp sending unit on the passenger side out line.

I think I went +90K on my last set with just the beginnings of some electrode wear.

The cluster in my 5-lug is pretty messed up. The lens I put in it doesn’t fit correctly since I grafted it from an earlier Tacoma, and the gas gauge is dead. Toyota wants $150 for a new gas gauge, and it was cheaper to just buy a new cluster.

But here’s the issue: the mileage is programmed onto a ROM chip. The only way to change the mileage is to de-solder the ROM, wire it in-line with several resistors on a breadboard, and connect the correct pin outs into the serial port on a pre-2000 Windows PC. The mileage is programmed in Hexadecimal so you would have to use some kind of Serial IDE interface to change it.

Way too much work, so I’m just going to de-solder the ROM chip on this cluster and replace it on my new cluster.

    Let the tear-down begin.

I wasn’t super happy with the kit. The tolerances are too loose, Design flaws that could easily be corrected, and the instructions are a crappy pdf of pictures with Microsoft paint callout. You would think for a couple hundred bucks you would get something easier to put together, required less personal fabrication, and some professional instructions that are clear and well put together.

even 30k is pretty early. Some boosted guys do 30k. But most double electrode plugs are fine for up to 60-90k.

    Wow.

    That was easy.

I read a write up on how to do it on an IS300, and you basically have to tear the entire cluster apart to get to the ROM chip which is an integral part of the entire cluster. On the Tacoma it’s literally just a module that’s held in with two screws.

Something was rattling inside, so I shook it until it fell out.

    That’s not good.

I've had bad luck with them as well as belt clips & I've tried a lot. Stopped using them long before I got this truck. I hang my keys on my belt loop, when the keys get snagged something always breaks free. Ever since I got that belt clip with Snap On's name on it & started using heavy duty key rings, never happened again. I'll rip the belt loop on my pants instead.

    The Tacoma Odometer module.

And disembodied IC chip, and I have no idea what it does.

You have a hot air rework gun? Easy to reflow solder that back on. But it looks like the contacts are accessible from the sides, if yes a soldering iron will work.

I used to do a lot of SMD/BGA soldering on MacBooks, but I got rid of my nice rework station a long time ago. I'm going to have to do this with a soldering iron.

If it needs to be reflowed, I've reflowed plenty of SMD components with a portable butane torch using the heat/hot air attachment.
