I once shot a bear in my pajamas.
How he got in my pajamas I'll never know.
All kidding aside, if you believe a bear cannot reach the roof of a Tacoma, take a look at this maul crawler:

1492 is the wrong date for 1st contact. Vikings were visiting and trading long before Columbus started bumbling around.

I qualify my opinion after nearly 1000 nights spent in a ground tent in bear country, unarmed.

don't bring food in the tent. Or drinks or toiletries. Be smart about camping in bear country and minimize your risk.
At least in an RTT you'll get more of a warning to react and make your escape vs being in a ground tent. I sleep with a knife and my bear spray. Not gonna mess with zippers if I need to get out in a hurry.
And all in all I've been more worried about being struck by lightning while in the RTT than I ever have been about animals.

claws can get into the seam of the doors easy peasy

    Grizzled can climb too

few years back a bear broke into a trailer through on of the roof vents. No idea how it managed to wiggle its fat butt through that small of an opening but the owners had a big surprise when they returned to their camper and opened the door.

And I agree with you - bear safety is all about minimizing risk and keeping attractants locked up securely

and take more than one if possible. Different bear aware instructors can have different views and offer different advice

your numbers are a bit off there. I can set up my RTT just as fast as any ground tent. Don't even notice it on the vehicle 99% of the time.

Usually in Maine NH or VT but my parents have a place in Tahoe so I plan to take a trip out there at some point and I know they have to keep their garbage in bear proof metal boxes.
