Yeah they're definitely phenomenal cameras, very easy to use, focus for the most part was spot-on, and the results were easy to edit to my liking, but I still get pretty damn close with the T2i. The darkness is what kills it, so I'll see how it goes when I'm editing my new Ecuador photos. I feel like I need to rent/borrow one or both of them for a longer period of time so I can really get a sense of when it's actually too dark out for action shots. I definitely have issues in the understory at dawn and dusk with the T2i so that would definitely improve with either camera. I am still learning to adjust the ISO in low light and trying to avoid grainy shots, too. It's always tough when you have like 2 seconds to adjust shutter speed, focus, and aperture!

Thanks! That's what I heard about the 7d mki vs mkii, as well. Apparently the mki has a less reliable focus or something, but the mkii was great! How'd you like the 5d mk3 vs mk4? My friend that I borrowed from shoots weddings with his and he said that it was night and day with the mk4 being so much better.

Awesome, thanks! At this point, I pretty much know that when I invest in a new body it'll be the 5d4, though I might want to use one again in low light to see how much I'm missing out on currently.

Why wouldn't you get an adapter @inv3ctiv3? The Sony action is pretty darn good these days?

I think my biggest struggle with the mkIII is the speed of autofocus. Seems "slow" to acquire in single point and will often acquire a piece of grass when in multiple points...not that the grass isn't pretty, just not what I wanted at the time :)

Oh yeah, I did notice that the 5d4 seemed a tad slower to focus than the T2i, which seemed odd. But I did read that choosing spot sometimes makes it a bit worse over choosing the center square of af points. I don't remember why that was but both focus methods seemed to do the job and the spot did seem the slower of the two.

I primarily use one shot and take the picture immediately after getting a focus lock, but I've played around with AI servo. The problem was that the hummingbirds move so erratically in and out of the frame at 400mm that it would switch back and forth between the background and the bird. Easier to focus on the feeder, wait for a bird, then get a quick re-focus when something shows up.

It was either single point or the center square, both seemed to work fine. With as close as I was the head basically fills the center square anyways. I want to say the square was a touch faster to focus than single spot and hunted less because it had more to work with.

Have you tried back button focus Kev? I’ve found it helps stay locked on. Does take some getting used to.

I have tried it but I'm not sure if I'm using it appropriately to get the most benefit. I'm so used to just using the normal shutter button that the back button is super foreign to me. I'm also usually using my thumb more to hold the camera, but I'll have to give it some more practice. I remember you talking about or linking to information about the benefits of back button, but I don't remember off-hand. How does it help keep you locked on any differently than half-pressing the shutter?

The benefit comes from not having to release focus when you press the shutter. Always locked.

It does take getting used to.

Ohhhh that's what helps with burst photos. I was wondering how people keep the focus of a moving subject when shooting burst. That makes so much more sense now, I'll definitely have to give that a better chance.

Went to Joshua Tree for a climbing trip in January. @at_olw would've been there but Mother Nature had other plans for him that weekend. Here's some of what ya missed...

Phenomenal sunsets just about every night

    Some trucks

And some camping in Hidden Valley.

Lots of good climbs. We hit trashcan rock to get back in the swing of things then went straight from that into "The Swift," a 5.7 3-pitch climb on Lost Horse Wall. So good!
Then some milder things like Stitcher Quits and Toe Jam and on the last day we did Right On, a 5.6 3-pitcher up Saddle Rock. Fun stuff!

So rad. Wish I could have made it! It's been way too long since I've made it to J tree and my trad gear sure is getting dusty these days. Damn catastrophic mudslides and 12hr shifts at the EOC!

Baja! Made a trip down when I was invited to a party at la fonda, set up a longer trip with @at_olw, only to have my friend's plan at la fonda move to two weekends later... so we got to go farther south!

Drove straight to Punta Baja, spent a couple nights while I figured out how to catch a wave, then headed down to Punta San Carlos for a night and back up to Punta Baja for the last night. San Carlos turned out to be much more of a wind-surfing spot as opposed to actual surfing, so that was ridiculous and the winds sucked. We headed back north to punta baja along the coast road instead of using highway 1. All the beta we tried collecting on that road was incredibly mixed, ranging from "You have 4x4, you'll be fine" to "Don't do it... a motorcycle might make it." But we chanced it and it was barely 4x4-worthy for only like 100 feet... quintessential baja backroad?

    Anyways, on to photos!

    Blasting out to Punta Baja:

Punta San Carlos was interesting... but we realized we had a better day than others. This poor kite-surfer lost his sail and was paddling after it, all the way to the fishing village down the way.
