    Ok,

Since we are on the subject of camping with bears, there are few places as “Beary” as the Atnarko River Valley near Bella Coola, B.C. So many fricken bears they actually have a “bear viewing area”.

I drove my Tacoma up the Atnarko Tote Road (an ancient wagon road used by traders, gold rushers, and trappers ages ago) as far as you can go in a truck. This sign is posted near the start for hikers using the road.

Notice that the sign does not say “Failure to do so may result in death”, or “run for your fuckin life”, but states you will get a fine for annoying the bear, so I assume the rangers expect you to at least survive the encounter and pay up.

I gotta say, I felt some love for the government body that decided that in the Atnarko River Valley the bears are the priority. It’s a place for the bears 1st and foremost. We are only there with the bears permission.

Also true, note is says “WHEN a bear approaches”, not “IF a bear approaches”. We saw three bears in thirty minutes on that road.....they ain’t joking.

May result in a fine? How about “death”?

If things get dicey, remember, bear ribs are excellent. Slow roast and then BBQ like pork ribs.

In my warped mind there is an alternate forum (universe) where these bears are talking smack about these overlander types. Fvck me, how funny would their memes be....

    Sigh

Or perhaps the taste of a hipster RTT tent dweller vs wall tent outfitter.

They've got a pepper spray mixture in the shell. Get your bear spray and slug/shot in one burst and in case you start shooting all over the place you wont kill the other guys at the toyota meet

I'm planning to buy some to use for a deterrent if a bear gets after our chickens. I would prefer not killing an animal that's just looking for a meal (unless that meal is me!).

I'm extremely paranoid about bears while backpacking but still don't feel the extra pound or so weight to carry a pistol is worth it. Had one creeping around our site two months ago while backpacking in NC so I hardly slept at all and kept a fire going.

makes sense for the chx problem. Ya, if you dont like a pistol the UDAP bear spray in the LARGE canister has a good track record. the chest holster works great. U have less than a couple of seconds to get it out

I'd go even further and let the rangers shoot armed assholes in defense of the bears.
We got too many fucking people and definitely not enough bears.

In short, don't get into a situation where a bear (or any wildlife really!) might lose its life because of your stupid ass. Stay at Starbucks if you're scared.
