I'd rethink that cooler. I researched it and the molding they use on it isn't the best. Lots of bad reviews about the lid not closing all the way on them and allowing air and even water to come out of them when turned upside down. I'd go with the Ozark if you're looking for a cheaper one.

I just know in Many Glacier Campground, I was reading about the parks issuing citations for food left out or things not put away. Areas with a big bear problem take that stuff seriously. We can't just leave coolers in an open pickup bed without a lock on it.

    From the website
    "Food Storage

Animals are attracted to food and food odors. All food, lawfully taken fish, garbage, and equipment used to cook, serve or store food must be kept sealed in a vehicle, or in a camping unit that is constructed of solid, non-pliable material, or suspended from any NPS designated food hanging device, or secured in any NPS designated storage locker, secured in an Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) approved bear resistant container or secured in a structure or dwelling, at all times, except when these items are being transported, consumed, or prepared for consumption.

Do not burn waste in fire rings or leave litter around your camp.

Garbage must be properly stored at all times. Use bearproof trash cans.

Violation of food storage regulations may result in $75 in fines and fees and/or confiscation of improperly stored items."

Trasharoos are basically worthless in bear country except to haul firewood or something.

FWIW, they don't consider rotomolded coolers bearproof out there. They're 'bear resistant'. So we'll either have to rent bearproof cans (which is what I had to do when backpacking RMNP), or get one off the zon and take it with us, or keep things sealed in the truck.

Also, just one more thing. Can we do an overlanding spoof video as part of this trip. It could be glorious.

I am not opposed to making an EAF video. Subbed for the clip of using my Treds to get over the curb in a parking lot.

Max trax and all the things. Chainsaws to clear the weeds. Cut "resistant" chaps, just because we can. Safety meetings and group strategizing.

You read any reviews on the Ozark Trail then? They're both marginal at best, without spending over $200 for a fuckin cooler. Shit's laughable as fuck that people do that.

My understanding was that a number of the "resistant" coolers became "proof" when a lock is used through the loops. Issue being that some bears figure out to bite the rubber latch straps to pull it open.

I forget what they're called buy there are simple aluminum cages that fit real close over cheapo containers/coolers to prevent them from coming open when tumbled and keep bears out.

Yeah I'd never pay that for a cooler. With that said, i own the ozark one and am pretty happy with how its made. Would like to have an Rtic but that would be the absolute most I'd spend on one. Only reason I've gotten my money out of the ozark one is because its fell out, been ran over, etc. and still works good. I would've had to buy 3 or 4 $30 plastic ones by now if i didn't have the molded one.

There's also a difference in rotomolded and say blow molded coolers.

seems to sort of depend on what you read. The IGBC certifies for "resistance" and notes that you have to use nut/bolt or properly sized padlock to count. I saw at least one park site that references the IGBC certifications.

There is a walmart Lifetime cooler on the list. ;)

TBH, it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone just said no cause they didn't feel like dealing with questions that day. Wouldn't be the first time some sort of enforcement official has done that.

    so, forget the bears now.

What about wheeling? Think i'll "need" to remove mudflaps or is it more like "should"?
And how big of a tire can I... :D

RCI Metalworks is in Fort Collins CO just north of Denver. Maybe I'll need to order some parts next spring to pick up in person on the way through.

Will have to see how my DIY plastic skids hold up until then, if I actually get around to making them. :D
