I think I need a better antenna.. I've had someone come in a couple times super broken for a couple seconds and then they're gone :'( Not nearly as much traffic as I was hoping for around here...

Probably doesn't help that I can't call out to see if anyone else is monitoring too though.

 

I've got one of the Nagoya 320A antenna's for mine and seems to pick up a little better outside. Just put the mag mount one on the truck and will report back how that one does on reception.

You heading over to the Ham Fest tomorrow to test in Huntsville?

 

Idk, was thinking about it, but with parking fee, $10 entry fee, and $10 test taking (I think that's what they said?), I figure it might be just as well to wait and go with @Jerneyman Sept 1st.
Unless you or someone else is going, maybe then I could motivate myself to get out of bed that early..

 

There's one down here on the 8th (Saturday) with a free class for technician with the test Sunday also free. I can't make the class because of work but I'm going to see if maybe they will let me come and test. Will have to see if I can get someone to come in early for me. Which is like pulling teeth for some reason. They usually schedule 2 guys that get off another job at 8 and they have to be there by 9 to relieve us.

I'm about 25 minutes from Auburn to the southeast.

 

Oh ok, yeah that is quite a drive. I make my way down to Auburn on occasion though for the occasional hang out with old friends from college.

Cancel that about the antenna. Just listened in on an entire conversation on a local repeater. Guess it's just not many people talking, because they were loud and clear. Repeater is 8ish miles away I think. Not too bad for a handheld with stock antenna I guess

Edit: Let me paraphrase the end of this conversation that I just picked up the end of:

Guy: wow, I probably shouldn't say this, but I know people who got it at 5 lol.

 

Roof decking is on (still covered with a tarp). 6 pieces of siding to hang, 2 doors to build and shingling left to dry this monster of a shed in.

Trying to find a good antenna that I can mount on my roof rack for this ham radio. Any idea where to start? Don’t want magnet base. Rather it be more permanent than that. I’m looking for an antenna that would typically be mounted via a hole in your roof. I’ve got another mounting option in mind besides that though.

I've got a coworker with a tacoma that's really into ham. I'll let you know what he says.

 

Truck question: how many of you guys have the cab mount chop? I’m thinking about doing a different wheel and tire setup but would prefer to stay away from the cmc.

Currently on stock rugged fail rims with 255/85-16 KM2’s and spacers.

Thinking about going to 18x9 0 offset rim with 285/65-18’s or something slightly smaller than what I currently have (around the 32.5” range). Only concern is rubbing on the cab mount since the new setup will be wider.

What wheel/tire setups are you guys running?
