Howdy, I recently traded in my rad red truck for a super white. I kept my satoshi, figuring it would be cheaper to have it professionally resprayed than to buy a new one outright.

To save money, I'm going to try and do the prep work myself. I have carefully taped up all the non-red parts of the grille, but I'm not sure how to proceed from there. Do I need to sand, prime, then sand again? There are no imperfections in the paint now, so I'm wondering if I need to sand before I prime. If I need to sand after priming, what grits should I use?

And if anyone knows a decent paint shop in the DFW mid cities, let me know! Thanks!

I'm sorry about your situation. Did the doctor tell you it's curable...?

yea yea...if they still made rad red, I would have gotten one. Super white was my next choice.

you need to sand then prime then sand again..

you don't need to get down to the nit and gritty...800 grit then work your way up...I got up to 1000 before priming...after that I sanded with 2000 grit then primed again...once painted i wet sanded...:D

    good luck...just take your time...

Is there clear coat on top of your original red? Yeah, you definitely need to sand away to get the primer to bite. Prime.. sand.. base white.. wet sand.. clear coat.. buff.

There is. I'm only going to prep it through priming and a final sanding. I'm having a paint shop take it from there.

yes it is that bad...i've seen a lot of RR Tacomas whether XR, 4x4, etc...that have turned pink...some have even gone so far to have an orange tinge to them...

blame it on the clear coat...or blame it on the owner maintenance of the paint/clear coats...either way...PINK FTL...lol

I'm sure if women knew that the RR turn pink...the RR would be top in female choice of color instead of SWB...

Well, I ended up priming it and that went well, so I picked up some color matched aerosol and clear coat and took a shot at painting it myself...Went well until about the third coat of base when the finish started to fisheye..so it's hosed now.

I took it to a local body shop to get a quote, and they wanted $200 to spray it! They said it was $125 just for the paint and another $75 since they have to strip it down since the paint I used will react with their paint....

you guys think they are jerkin me around?

Sounds about right. Sucks when you do not know a friend in the business.

Your better off sanding it down and repainting it again, if you need some help I'm in Bedford.
