I had one long trip prior to that update which was a 220 miles. Some of the same roads as my post update trip. I got 20.3mpg average on that trip. It's a bit hard to determine for sure that it was the update or engine break in since it's only a month old. I believe it is better primarily because I can squeeze down and get 5th gear which can get you over a grade where before you'd get 4th or even 3rd under the same conditions. In town is the same kind of thing... before I was seeing 17.3 and now I get 18.1. I drive it the same, just better control to get the right gear, to me that's where the most gain is.

What do you mean by "flashed" in this context. I see the word being used here for multiple things. It's confusing.

Some use "flash" for wiping out learned memory (unhooking battery for 15-20 minutes). Some use "flash" for updating ECU software (TSB, for example). They're different things.

Update on my truck with the new firmware. Still love the truck, power delivery is smoother, instead of the OMG all the power at 3500rpm, I feel like it gives you alittle more 2k- 3k. As for shifting, i never really had a problem with the way it drove before, so i don't notice much difference. Stumbling is still gone, however if i had to list a negative, i have noticed that the truck reallllllllllly pulls timing in hot weather low rpm high load, much more than it used to. But i'll take that over the stumble any day.

If I got kick back from my dealership, in a town that’s about 160 feet above sea level, I’d ask “would you jump from a 160 foot high building?”

I don’t believe so. After reading everyone’s reply and talking to my service tech later, he said “they both do the same thing.” They applied both because I asked for both.

I just called my dealership, here in Fayetteville, AR. Told them I had this problem, I had ridden in a friends Taco and his drove differently and better. They scheduled me for Tuesday.
    I have a 2017, TRD.

I hope this fixes the problem of the over revving when I have slow starts.

I like that dealership. Took care of me when I was visiting my sister not too long ago. Very good.

Could I ask your service advisers name? I'll be calling this dealership next week. In the past, although service was friendly, they have been less than enthusiastic about dealing with this and other problems. I'd also like to hear which TSB they applied for you and what you think about it.

Dealer said it was VIN specific and wouldn't commit to applying the update...how do I know if my VIN qualifies?

Read the TSB, it'll tell you if your Taco is included.

I have a 2018 with a 2GR-FKS engine, but don't know what the following means in the TSB:

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 2016 - 2018 Tacoma VDS(s): AZ5CN, BZ5DN, CZ5AN, DZ5BN, EZ5CN, FZ5DN, GZ5AN, HZ5BN, RZ5CN, SZ5AN

What is the VDS(s), and how do I know what mine is?

Is anyone aware of a thread that explains the S-mode shifting? I can't seem to find anything.

The Vehicle Identification Number, commonly referred to as the VIN, is a sequence of 17 letters and numbers that is uniquely assigned for each vehicle.

The VIN provides some information about the vehicle. It is typically composed of four sections. The first three digits are called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). Toyota VINs starting with "1", "4", or "5" represent vehicles assembled in the United States, VINs beginning with "2" indicate vehicles assembled in Canada, and vehicles with VINs beginning with "3" were assembled in Mexico. Vehicles with VINs that start with "J" were produced in Japan.

The next five digits (4 through 8) are the Vehicle Description Section (VDS). These digits provide information on the body style, engine type, seat belt/airbag types, vehicle series, and model line respectively. The ninth digit is a check digit used internally. The 10th digit indicates the model year; letters (except "O" and "Z") were used for vehicles up to the 2000 model year while numbers are used for 2001-2009 vehicles and returning to letters for 2010. For example, "X" means the 1999 model year, "Y" is the 2000 model year, "1" represents the 2001 model year, and "A" represents 2010. The 11th digit is the plant code. Finally, digits 12 - 17 are the unique serial number.

S mode shifting is just a gear limiter. What ever gear you have it set to.... the engine will use only those gears and not go any higher than what you have it set at.

i’m at south bay toyota right now trying to get this done. service advisor said some bullshit about “if we can’t diagnostic it, then we can’t do it”. we’ll see what happens.

also, I hate the dealership. salesman comes out, sees me pulls in and proceeds to talk all this shit on my truck. tries to tell me that I couldn’t have possibly paid for a Pro without some kind of mark up(which I didn’t pay one cent over for what I needed to). then he starts saying white for a truck is a girls color and that calvary blue is more of his style. dude stfu and leave me alone! i’ve never wanted to punch someone so hard from the front seat.

    anywho, i’ll keep everyone posted.

went to Monroe WI Toyota dealer today. Excellent service. Service counter guy asked what problem is, I showed him PDF of TSB 62-18 and said I experience those exact problems. He said no problem and might be done in an hour. About 50 minutes later he said it was done and also mentioned there is a recall for the AC fan and will call me ad soon as he can get parts.
The reflash makes the truck 100% better. It is night and day better. Strongly encourage all to have it done. Thanks to Tacomaworld I was in the know.

I just had TSB 0062-18 done by Fowler Toyota in Norman, Oklahoma. It was a very smooth experience and the service advisor, Justin, was very helpful. I dropped the truck off for an appointment for a different issue and gave him a printed copy of the TSB and he agreed to take a look at it. They called me back and said they weren't able to duplicate the issue, but installed the new software anyway. If you live near the OKC metro and want to get the new TSB installed, Fowler was very easy to deal with.

As for the tune, I think that it seems to shift much smoother, but it's hard to tell because I haven't had it on the highway yet. Oklahoma is very flat so the true test will be next time I go on a road trip.
