Anyone knows what’s up with the rattle in the manual tacoma? Rattle or knocking. Heres a detailed video about it https://youtu.be/pJjb3zLqAl0

Video was too long, but I did catch him saying it occurs in neutral when he's coasting down a hill. Technically you're not supposed to coast in neutral anyway so.... um.... yeah. Stop doing it and it'll go away.

Mine makes a similar sound and I can hear it when I'm sitting still in neutral with my window down. Here's what I do... I say "oh well!"

Coasting in neutral is bad for certain automatics, but this is a manual. Unless everything I know is a lie.

I'm not saying it's bad for the vehicle, it's just not "safe." And yes, safe is in quotes because it is relative and what you're comfortable with yada yada yada.

If you're in a gear you still have control over the vehicle. Otherwise you're free wheeling. They teach truck drivers to be in a gear before descending a hill for that very reason... if it takes off on you, there's no stopping it.

Safety concerns aside, if the guy left the truck in gear and the noise goes away, why not do it?

    Doesn’t the knock bother you?

Not a knock... there's a little clatter but mine isn't as bad as his. And I only hear it sitting in neutral with the window down.

And no, knocks, clattering, etc doesn't bother me

My second gen did this but I just considered it normal. Now I wonder what It was. Keep us posted.

This is normal. It's the backlash jiggling about. Every manual does it but if you drive properly it should rarely happen. No big deal if it does though, its harmless.

Every manual /does not/ do this. In fact, every other manual trans I've driven has not done this. 2x 85 bmws, 90s explorers, early 90s Silverado, early 90s sentra, 2nd & first gen escapes, 64 corvette, 64 corvair…. so on so forth. This brand-spanking new Tacoma of mine is the /only/ stick shift I've driven that makes these rattling noises over bumps in neutral or w/ clutch in, or when engaging/disengaging the clutch at a standstill or on the highway. Seems to be very common on the third gens, mind.

There's also another thread that references what may be the same rattle, claiming it was fixed by an aftermarket throw-out bearing repair kit

Yes mine does this, its fucking annoying.

Ive been forced to downshifting which helps but the clutch will likely go sooner then later.

Took a ride with a shop manager and he basicly had his arm crossed the whole ride and didnt say anything like a ass and corse the truck didnt make the noise. I relealized after that it does it in neutral.

Im kinda glad to hear its normal, i saw this video months ago. I believe Toyota probably gave this guy a new truck because he hasnt posted anything else and not responding to comments either. Just a guess, he did praise the dealership alot in his post. I took it in twice for this and atleast have documentation.

Mine does it....2019 DCSB OR MT....only 1600 miles on it. At first I was worried, but after talking to a friend who had basically the same truck as me but 2nd gen, i'm not so worried. He said his made the exact same noise, and never seemed to get worse. My old subie WRX actually had a similar rattle, but it was harder to hear. Good to know though, I'll definitely keep my "ears open" to see if it gets worse, and maybe mention it at my 5K miles service.

Still love my truck to death!

It does, you just didn't hear it in those other cars. Fair enough to say it may be louder in the Tacoma than is desired but my statement stands. It's not an issue beyond the noise being bothersome.

As far as that other thread, if whatever noise they were hearing was fixed by a throw-out bearing repair kit they were dealing with a different noise source.

I'd be interested in seeing what the carrier bearing is doing when he's going over the bumps after the warm up. I hear that same noise in my truck when I go over some rather rough train tracks by the office. Mine will do it in gear clutch depressed, out of gear in neutral with or without the clutch depressed, or in gear clutch out. Its always sounded like its directly behind me in the middle of the truck so I just attributed it to something jouncing under there. Never bothered me much just because of all the driveline noise my Manual equipped diesel Rams made (G56 gear rollover and twin disk clutch floater plate rattle will make you want to wear a straight jacket).

I'm not sure how you can objectively say that, not having driven the same cars as I have. And I was a nitpicky mechanic, specifically listening for odd noises on test drives for the majority of them. The singled out ones I listed, I put substantial miles on (as personal rigs) with nary a peep from the transmissions, and certainly no rattles. And I offroaded the piss out of that Silverado, so definitely went over some bumps with the clutch in a time or two -- NO RATTLE

The 64 corvair had a very notchy 2nd gear, and would sometimes clunk into that gear if you forced it -- but that had about 5 feet of shift linkage held together by what felt like rubberbands.

And if you're saying it's not an issue other than the noise --- then please, tell me what's /making/ the noise? Specifically?

The reason I can say it is because backlash is "unavoidable for nearly all reversing mechanical couplings."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash_(engineering)

The noise specifically is the gears clanking within the backlash tolerance. Now to be fair the noise you're hearing and the noise in the video could be something else. I could be wrong. I'm guessing across the internet so... That being said noise from backlash is common and has been discussed on the webs many times. I've experienced it myself in my own Tacoma as well as other vehicles (namely Jeeps, they do it worse than Tacoma's in my experience).

Yeah, i bet thats my noise going over bumps when its left in gear - but i doubt its my noise rocking my shifter back and forth at a standstill - or letting my clutch in and out at a standstill in neutral

Internet diagnosis of noise isnt ideal haha

Its not a clunk or a clunk/clunk like iver heard from sloppy land rover differentials — this is more like a bucket of bolts rattling around as i shift over bumps

I tried to replicate on my '18 Pro today and I could not get it to rattle. I'll take that.
