Drive Shaft Lube

I searched and didn't find anything- except for first gen.

I have a 14 Sport and I today I noticed a strange noice- I am still searching for that noice, but when I was under the truck I notice a zurk in the driveshaft. (I was informed they did not have them, I thought htis was strange.) Needless to say I know what I am doing tomorrow.

I know of the one zurk rught at the front of the shaft. Does anyone know how many there are as I head to the rear? Any other ones on the truck I should be aware of? If there a particular amount you put in. My old wrx we filled till clean grease came out but I read that can be bad drivetrains. Lastly, what kind of grease? I have been reading alot of info and some say whatever is in the gun to very specifics. I have had the truck 40K and I have never done it so I am not very happy right now. I am normally much better than this.

Have you looked? They aren't invisible or even pretending to be hiding.

OEM, if equipped with grease fittings, has 3 in the rear and two in the front.

Easy to do for all but some, 4X4 you have some more up front, Good luck with those!

 

Those two are easy as well.

To make the rear of the front shaft even easier, just remove that little plate there. It is only two bolts.

 

I use lucus Red N Tacky every oil change. 2 zerks on the front 3 on the rear. Pump till fresh grease squeezes out of all the bearings is what I was told to do.

I had never looked since I was told I didn’t need to worry about it. I have been under the truck a ton but I guess the zurk wasn’t visible. Will be doing my neighbors tomorrow two since his haven’t been done.

 

Not all tacos have zerk fittings so that could be a reason why you were told not to worry about it.

 

Thanks again everyone- so I found 3 and I am embarrassed to say how nasty the old grease was. The ones I found were right on the knuckles on the shaft. I didn’t see the other two. Would someone be able to elaborate on their locations?

 

Lucas red n tacky here on all my chassis parts. Its great grease and is available everywhere, even walmart !

lets be clear... you are talking about the U joints correct? as far as I know the slip joint is not greasable. U joints are

Yep - 2015 Toyota PreRunner - V6/4.0L - no zerks front or rear. My '95 2WD Isuzu Rodeo was like this. 300K miles later all was well.

 

I bought the small Lucas hand pump. The kits of grease that fit it are relatively inexpensive and available everywhere. I use either the red n tacky or the green...can't remember what the green is called. Both are good. I don't fill it until new grease is coming out, I Just fill it until some grease comes out. I read somewhere that forcing too much grease out can be a bad thing.

 

Nothing like a pneumatic grease gun to get all the old stuff out with minimal effort...

 

That is correct, no zerk fittings for us PreRunner SR5 owners. Thought I was going nuts and never owned a vehicle without them but I guess the Toyota engineers know best.

 

I've flushed mine out for years and when I sold my T100 with 267,000 miles on it, it was still on the originals. In my opinion, it's better to flush the old crap out than to try and baby the seals. Plus, it did a little undercoating under my truck. I'll continue this practice.
