I'm curious what everyone's experience is in regards to hurricanes.
I live in Fl and we've had some doozies. I'm looking into purchasing the Bakflip M4 for my 17' DCLB and maybe I'm paranoid about nothing.
Do any of you remove the folding covers prior to major storms? Or is it fine if left closed?

A hard cover should be fine. I don’t think there is enough air volume inside to really create a massive pressure difference from the wind. And these covers do not perfectly seal anyway. So as long as it is latched down correctly, it will be ok

Hail is about the only thing you have to worry about. It will ding the cover up just like it will ding up the truck.

Depends how tight the seal is. If there's a sufficient opening to allow wind to get inside there's no doubt it could get ripped off. Probably be fine but not a bad idea to remove in the event one's on its way.

I have a tri-folding soft tonneau cover and I took off for Hurricane Irma. Was more concerned about flying debris breaking it, than it flying off.

That’s going to depend exactly where you are in regards to a hurricane. If it’s ripping roofs off near by your cover probably isn’t going to stand much of a chance. If you’re just getting some 60 mpg wind gusts then well it’ll probably be ok

Buddy. My Tri-fold vinyl tyger tonneau holds up with me doing 100 mph daily in the interstate. If it’s installed it shouldn’t be a problem. The backflip is a solid tonneau compared to my vinyl. If a tree is uprooted and hits your truck at 130mph you might have a problem more than just a cover.

Driving and getting direct 100 mph winds blown at your tonnea are two different things. The cab is blocking most of that wind while your drive and the aerodynamics and how the air is flowing around is also offering the cover protection. It’s not getting the direct wind of you driving. Maybe if you do it in reverse

Ok...just drive during the hurricane. Just make sure it’s not in reverse. Lawfarin thinks that you may have a issue. I’m no tonneau expert but I stayed at the Springfield Holiday inn express on Thursday so I’m pretty confident.

I’ve installed hundreds of tonneaus. Some are better than others. Actually the Bakflip only uses plastic latches. I’ve seen a few people lose them going down the road. Usually it’s installer related as they may not have adjusted the latches after installing. Some times the latches barely grab the rails. Anyway your cheap vinyl cover probably has better latches than what the Bakflip has. So it should be a little more secure.

I’m not saying a tonneau cover can’t withstand a hurricane. I’m saying there are many variables. Even if it stands up to 100+ mph winds doesn’t mean some other debris ain’t going to damage it or your truck. Best thing you can do is take pictures of it if you can’t park somewhere where it will be safe. That way if it gets damaged your can claim it in your insurance. Most of the time they will cover it. Although you’re responsible for the deductible. Just take a few pics of it and keep the receipt of what you paid for it.
